Undoubtedly the first movie in history to have played in theaters with three different endings (depending on which theater you attended), Clue is a silly whodunit based on the familiar board game featuring Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, and all the other usual suspects. A broadly comic cast play the sundry suspects gathered in a mansion to solve a murder, knowing that one of their numbers is the culprit. Michael McKean, Eileen Brennan, and Tim Curry are the best of the bunch, and the film is as lightweight an experience as a round of the game itself. Directed by Jonathan Lynn (My Cousin Vinny). The video release contains all three endings. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Clue the movie   November 2, 2008
I really enjoy this movie! It is great and the DVD came safely home! I have watched it several times already.

4 out of 5 stars Get a clue (3.5 stars)   November 2, 2008
I bought this for five dollars, and it was well worth the money. It was actually better than I remembered, for I was too young to get much out of it the first time (the jokes are "Airplane" style). "Clue" is a mixed bag--part spoof, part satire, part slapstick, part camp. The sum of these parts blended into a satisfying film. It hit the spot on Halloween night, even though it wasn't dark, though the humor was black (thinking of Alfred Hitchcock's monologues).

The movie was a little different than the game--instead of Mrs. White being the maid, there was a French maid (with a ridiculous French accent) named Yvette; Mrs. White was made over into a black widow, which was fine with me. It's called artistic license. And with "Clue" being a board game, there was a lot to flesh out to make "Clue: The Movie" long enough for a feature film. "Candyland" would have been easier to make a movie out of.

I did appreciate the addition of extra characters, such as the butler, Wadsworth, played to perfection by Tim Curry, the cook, the stranded motorist, the telegram girl and the cop. The only flub in casting was the guy who played Mr. Boddy--he seemed more suited to playing a Mafia hit man (and maybe I'm wrong on this, but I didn't know there were black cops in 1954. Hey, I'm only twenty-seven). BEWARE! SPOILER AHEAD! These extras were needed for corpses. Otherwise, all of the main characters would have been killed off but for one.

I think the setting was perfect (an old, Gothic mansion on a dark and stormy night), somewhere (I am guessing upstate New York) in 1954 (during the midst of McCarthyism, which added lots of fodder to the screenplay). I think the script was intelligent and bawdy (with a few double entendres thrown in), without being down in the gutter or taking itself too seriously.

When I first watched this years ago, I hated the multiple endings--whoever heard of such a thing? But when I watched it again, I realized the first two endings were what could have happened, and were entertaining (though the first one with Tim Curry running from room to room deducing in rapid succession what had happened was a bit tedious), although unnecessary.

However, this was a delightful romp. It is pure silliness and lots of fun. Every time the characters would enter a room, we would scream, "Ballroom!" or "Conservatory!" or "Secret Passage!". It was great, though I do think only fans of the game would appreciate it, despite the differences between the two.

5 out of 5 stars CLUE   October 26, 2008
This movie, Clue, is a great movie for those who enjoy the unexpected, and for those of us who enjoy to let lose and enjoy the silly but very humoreous side of our personality. A+

5 out of 5 stars Funny 80's cult classic on DVD w/ 4 different versions!!!   October 25, 2008
This shows what dvd technology can do!!! Sure it's skimpy on extras with only the trailer but this dvd has all three endings which played at movie thaeters in 3 different versions, don't think thats ever been done again, when you pres "Play Movie" on you remote you see a screen letting you choose a random playing of one of the three endings(the only bummer is you can't choose the ending you want, the player chooses for you,but it's Clue,so you want to be suprized!) or choosing the the original home video version that was originally on VHS that had all 3 endings played at the end!!! So thats 4 possible versions on one little shiny DVD!!! Very groovy!!! Recommended!!! A+

1 out of 5 stars A lot of unnecessary (inappropriate) content   October 20, 2008

This movie contains a lot of unnecessary sexual references, some more obvious than others. It is rated PG, but definitely is not suitable for children under 13, or even young teens. I bought it to show to a group of 12-15 year olds, but definitely will not show it to that age group again.
