Breaking up is hard to do--but that doesn't mean you can't have some belly laughs about it. Forgetting Sarah Marshall provides that rare treat: a romantic comedy about breakups, that is both romantic and funny. The laughs, especially from writer-star Jason Segel, are both heartfelt and raunchy, and the film is just unexpected enough that it keeps the viewer's attention till the end. The touches of producer Judd Apatow, who's famously retooled rom-coms to appeal to guys as much as women, are woven throughout the film, but Segel's script, reportedly based on many of his own experiences, is fresh and original. And adult. Forgetting Sarah Marshall features male genitalia laffs presented in unexpected and human ways (the nude breakup scene is played for giggles but also deep poignancy), and the language and sex scenes are strictly for grownups--and rightly so. Segel's script, and his performance as Peter, show that he understands the true nature of adult relationships, which provides the refreshing difference between this film and some of Apatow's other crude creations. The cast is sublime; Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) plays title character Sarah, a self-absorbed actress, and Russell Brand is her new British honey who accompanies her to--what are the chances?--the exact same Hawaiian resort as Peter, who's nursing his broken heart. Mila Kunis plays Rachel, the resort employee who gives Peter a reason to hope, and Paul Rudd is the surfing instructor who gives him his own brand of heartfelt advice ("When life gives you lemons, just say 'F--- the lemons' and bail," he says cheerily). The pacing is screwball, and the absurdities fly (a "Dracula" musical puppet show, and a surprisingly lovely Hawaiian version of "Nothing Compares 2 U"). Nothing the viewer will forget any time soon.--A.T. Hurley

1 out of 5 stars Tasteless   December 2, 2008
Another crude movie comes out of Hollywood. Not only was it completely tasteless, but the story was poorly written and the film was poorly executed along with terrible acting and even worse sound/music quality. Why are we allowing our brains to be fed this diet of junk? Maybe if we all stop watching such crass movies, the writers will be forced to come up with something wholesome and meaningful as well as entertaining. Is that too much to ask?

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Movie!!!   December 1, 2008
Though parts of it are a little raunchy and over the top, this is a hilarious movie and a must-have for any comedy collection!

I really don't get how some people rated this movie so highly. Maybe I saw a different "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"? This was a terrible movie. Like really, truly awful. There were no redeeming factors. I did not even smile much less laugh a single time during this movie.

Basically it's about this whiny guy named Peter who is upset that his TV actress, Sarah, broke up with him to be with some tree hugging singer. Awww.... I feel for you, Peter. I really do. But the fact that you REMAINED whiny and weepy all they way up until the last.... oh I dunno.... 7 minutes of the movie.... is really inexcusable. In all honesty, I really don't care all that much about how your ex your broke your heart and I certainly don't want to watch an hour and a half of you crying and drunkenly stumbling around Hawaii feeling sorry for yourself. This is supposed to be a ROMANTIC comedy. As in the movie should actually revolve around a ROMANCE. Not wallowing self pity with a new love (lust?) interest sort of thrown into the movie during the last half hour.

Along a similar segue, the plot lines were thin at best. Plus, the characters were extremely shallow and often would have these mystifying changes of personality in order to create some forced scene the director just HAD to have in the movie; most of which revolved around sex. Like did we just forget to hire a screen writer? Oh wait! Is that supposed to be the funny part? Because, to me, funny sex conversations are like watching a guy get hit in the balls. MAYBE funny once and then it just gets boring to watch.

So save your money. If you want a light, romantic comedy, forget Sarah Marshall and try something else.

5 out of 5 stars Hilariously Unexpected   November 26, 2008

I laughed a lot, which means this was very funny to me. Jason Segel from "Knocked Up" plays Peter Bretter whose girlfriend breaks up with him. Segel wrote the screenplay & bares all in the beginning of the film, which was startling. But he plays it in a very matter-of-fact way, seemingly comfortable even though not the most toned of men. His girlfriend is Sarah Marshall who is running on a crime scene TV show. Kristen Bell who is currently on TV's "Heroes" & was "Veronica Mars" in that series does an incredible acting job. The fine delicacy of emotion that comes across her face, the sorrowful regret as she breaks up with Peter, and the desire to come back to him are communicated with the depth one might achieve while standing on the first step walking down into the shallow end of the pool. She's also beautiful, but not overly funny. Mila Kunis from TV's "That 70s Show" & recently in "Max Payne" is both beautiful, touching & funny. As Rachel, she well handles the levels of sticking up for herself, romantic lead & funny sidekick to Peter. Russell Brand as the narcissistic rock star Aldous who is Sarah's new boyfriend preens and prances in hilarious fashion. Paul Rudd turns in an excellent comic performance as the air-headed surfing instructor. He was also in Knocked Up (Unrated Widescreen Edition) as well as Anchorman - The Legend Of Ron Burgundy (Unrated Widescreen Edition) & currently in the hilarious "Role Models." Jonah Hill who was in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" & "Knocked Up," shows up as a waiter with an agenda. Bill Hader from TV's "Saturday Night Live" & "Superbad" plays Peter's brother Brian. Brian's wife Liz is played by "Saturday Night Live" alumni Liz Cackowski. Nicholas Stoller who wrote "Fun With Dick & Jane" helms the picture for his first film & keeps the laughs and pacing brisk. The Dracula musical finale was hilariously unexpected. This is a great comic film. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars You won't forget this comedy   November 24, 2008

Jason Segel proves that he is the latest Judd Apatow protege to deliver the comic goods in this raunchy, sweet and totally entertaining comedy about healing broken hearts.

Segel wrote and stars as an underacheiving every man who, after getting dumped by his celebrity girlriend (Kristen Bell) takes a vacation to Hawaii to put her behind him. The buds of a new romance develop quickly when he meets Rachel (Mila Kunis) who works the front desk at the resort he stays at. But as fate would have it, Sarah and her new boyfriend (Russell Brand) are staying there as well.

In lesser hands, this could have devolved into pure Hollywood cliche: Segel's character spends the entire movie trying to win Sarah back all the while oblivious to the fact that Rachel is the right woman for him. Thankfully, this movie is a great deal smarter and more emotionally complex than that. Peter and Rachel begin, albeit hesitantly, a relationship but Sarah eventually realizes she still cares for her ex and attempts to win him back. Peter's dilemma of whether or not to pursue his relationship with Rachel or fall back into his old one with Sarah feels real and messy, with serious consequences.

But let's not get too serious here...this is a comedy after all. The supporting cast is terrific including Paul Rudd in another hilarious turn, the fat guy from Superbad who makes the most out of his limited screen time, and most notably Russell Brand as Sarah's new boyfriend. Brand manages to raise the comic energy of every scene he's in.

The movie ultimately works it's way towards a satisfying ending, but getting there is great fun. The jokes never feel rushed or out of characther. Segel's writing allows for the comedy to flow from the characters' personalities which can lead to some enormous belly laughs. There is also a ton of raunchy humor here as well, but it's evened out by the underlying tenderness that flows throughout the film.

The only question that lingers after the movie ends......who will be the next Apatow player to wow us with a comedy gem? I can't wait to find out.
