Barney has a new look to his old pad in this direct-to-video release. Using Barney's favorite tool--imagination--we find that his house has many surprises, including rooms filled with bubbles, butterflies, and beach balls. This 45-minute tape is song-filled as kids meet up with Barney's pals BJ and Baby Bop to discover lots of things, from making sour pickle faces to the wonders of pumpernickel bread. Although this production is not as episodic as the popular TV show, Barney has hardly changed in a dozen years, and in some ways has been passed by other educational shows. When BJ starts a band, nothing is taught about music or instruments as a Blues Clues episode might teach. And the humor seems old, even when Barney tries to be up to date. When Barney talks about a computer, it's with a surfboard-carrying mouse (computer mouse, get it?) named Murray who sings about "surfin' on the World Wide Web" without explaining anything about the Internet. Still, for youngsters who like the appealing and colorful world, there is more here than the average show from the purple dinosaur. (Ages 2 to 6) --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars One of the better Barney dvd's   November 8, 2008
I bought this dvd for my granddaughter when she was a little over a year old. She loved it then and as she has reached the ripe old age of two, she STILL loves it. What merely catches their eye at a young age becomes new information they learn as they mature and can digest it. The dvd is packed with things a parent can elaborate on and use as a visual to teach the child.

There is also in the main menu, a section that has just songs. For the younger viewers this will be the most interesting. There isn't much talking, just Barney song after Barney song. It could have been a dvd on its own. It's a nice bonus in the package.

Of all the Barney dvds I have purchased this is my granddaughter's favorite (and mine!)

5 out of 5 stars Barney's House is the Best yet!   September 3, 2007
I am raising my grandson who has developed a love for Barney. I purchased this DVD and he watches this movie more than any of the other Barney's. I really recommend this for your young one who likes Barney. The Big Loveable Purple Dragon?

3 out of 5 stars A franchise that is really showing its age   August 21, 2005

Simply put, what we have here is a once-charming franchise that is trying too hard to be relevant and maintain its appeal to earlier viewers who are now growing older. If Baby Bop is aggravating, the her brother B.J. borders on insufferable.

Meanwhile there are only two kids. This may only be a personal preference on my 2-year-old's part, but she definitely responds better to Barney shows when the kids are doing the singing & dancing, rather than a gaggle of costumed dinosaurs. The whole program lumbers laboriously from gag to gag and fails to keep the child's interest, unlike earlier shows.

The dialogue sounds more like it is aimed at 8-year-olds than the younger set. If I had an 8-year-old still watching Barney, I would be getting him professional help rather than getting this video. I'm glad we only checked it out from the library. Ugh.

4 out of 5 stars its ok   May 9, 2004

well, our baby sure seems to love it, so that speaks for something. over and over, and over and over. i personally find b.j the most annoying character in the history of television, radio, book, or word of mouth, but if it keeps our 1 year old happy, thats what it is set out to do, and it does it well.

i am not sure i agree with these "too much information" complaints, as part of the learning curve is absorbing information. these days kids are on the computer and more savvy than some adults in their preschool years, i find nothing wrong with a "surfing mouse" making an appearance in a barney video. my daughter already knows about the computer, cause she sees us on it - i also dont buy into the "too much talking" argument....our daughter is exposed to much more talking in life than she is people breaking out into song, so i have no problem with this.

my main complaint regarding this video is that i can not eat a sandwich anymore without hearing barney singing about pumpernickel, tortilla, and white breads. hey, who makes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a tortilla anyway?

5 out of 5 stars My 24 month old sister can't get enough   March 3, 2003

I bought my 24 month old sister this video a month ago and she has watched it at least once a day since. She asks for it all the time and she already sings along to most of the songs. There are a few parts she doesn't quite 'get' yet, but she is thoroughly entertained by it nonetheless. With the funny songs and skits, she enjoys singing along, looking for the puppy, making the sour pickle face, and dancing with the Rockers.
