Amazon.com essential video
Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the cliches being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.

And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity...

The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars Movie is great, DVD extras are lame   January 7, 2009
This movie is one of my favorites of all time. But I'm taking a star away from this item because it lacks the longer making-of documentary and the Cary Elwes video diary shot on location that was included in an earlier DVD release of the movie (which I've seen at a friend's house --- and I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine all those extras). The extras here are a pretty lame DVD game, and a few shorter, but new, features. One would think that for the 20th anniversary, there would at least be a director's or actor's commentary or something. If you're a fan of the movie, you'll want the earlier version if you can find it.

On the plus side, the DVD is relatively cheap for one of the best movies of the 1980s.

The back of my copy also promises a storybook. Nothing like that came with my copy (which I did not get at Amazon), and I have no idea what they're talking about. If someone could enlighten me, that would be great.

5 out of 5 stars Amazon, the Blu-Ray version of The Princess Bride was never released. Please DELETE this web page.   January 2, 2009
This movie is a classic, and as of January 2009, it STILL has never been released as a Blu-Ray disc. So, Amazon.com, why don't you take it the hell out of your product catalog until it is actually available to those that want to buy it?

Just do it.

5 out of 5 stars Cheap and Quick   December 27, 2008
Thanks for The Princess Bride. I've wanted this title for awhile but never wanted to pay a high price for it and I found it from this seller on Amazon. It was the right price and it came quickly. Thanks again.

5 out of 5 stars Princess Bride   December 24, 2008
This is a classic for our family. When our VHS tape would not play in a friends player we KNEW that it was time to replace and upgrade it with and to a DVD. Farm Boy and Buttercup are a true classic true love couple!

5 out of 5 stars I do love this movie.   December 24, 2008
With over 800 reviews at the time of this writing, it would be difficult for me to add anything that would be the least bit enlightening as to try to convince you to either buy or not buy this movie. I will say that I pay very little attention to features, technological enhancements, sound improvement or packaging. This type of stuff just is not on my radar screen.

About the only thing I can say is that I fell in love with this movie when I first saw it some fifteen years ago, have seen it numerous times since that date, and still love it. For me, it is funny, well acted, full of satire, relaxing to watch and Robin Wright is oh so HOT!

I think the first time I watch it, it was on a used copy of a VHS. I love it then. I recently saw it on one of the new special edition issues, and I love it just as much. This is one of those feel good movies for me. We live in such a cynical world, that it is nice to see a story like this, even if it is a bit cynical itself.
