Still think the 80's Generation was more Original versus today. August 25, 2008 I liked this movie quite a bit. I always wondered if they would make a sequel in the future nope not as of yet the story was cool the characters were well the aliens were so 80's but it was fun to watch and not boring. It was the same with Flight Of The Navigator sad it would've been interesting to say the least for a cool sequel!.But I think it is the return of the 80's an example would be the movies for 2008,2010!
Olde but a goodie July 27, 2008 Daryl is about a kid who finds himself in a strange place with a supposed memory loss only to find out he's a science project. A family who is desperate to have a child of their own takes him in only to have him taken away supposedly by his real parents. Yet another feel good movie but it delivers in my opinion.
Can a robot be a cyborg? June 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
'D.A.R.Y.L', is a movie that is for both boys and girls, but especially boys: The essential message is that boys should be careful with their words: Boys should strive to say that which is true, and not simply what they believe to be true, or are told is true. This movie glorifies thinking, celebrates intelligence.
What girls will learn is that they should avoid boys who are not like Daryl. In the movie, Daryl asks a question, "What is a hooker?" He first asks this question beside a lake, and you think, "A hooker is a fisherman". At least, I did, and I don't think I was the only boy who came to that conclusion while watching this movie.
Daryl hates "team sports" even though he is good at it. He says to his step-dad, "This is nothing but a pecker contest between you and the other coach", or something like that. Some birds will peck at each other. Daryl does not sing or dance, he is mathematically inclined, and takes words literally. Where others see poetry, he sees algebra.
Daryl does not need parenting, but he longs for a sense of belonging, identity, love. He is a man in the form of a boy. Who is his father, and who is his mother? There are three father figures in this movie: the first is a silent man who first "rescues" Daryl, but in an act of love, flies off a cliff in the process of helping Daryl escape detection. The second is his adoptive dad, and the third, a scientist who comes to see Daryl as more than just an artificial intelligence, but a sentient lifeform. And there is another scientist, a female, who also watches over him. Where is his family? His lack of need for the adults around him, annoys them.
My favourite line in this movie is when a military person says to another military person, "A child with a stick of chewing gum has just rendered your million dollar piece of hardware useless. Any suggestions?"
I think this movie is great for boys, especially when you look around and see very few, if any, positive images in newspapers, tv commercials, or upon billboards, which will make boys feel better about themselves.
Does not every boy yearn for wisdom, instruction, and understanding? Does not every boy know intuitively that he needs "good code" and not "syntax error"? Words have the power to heal, to inspire, to impart hope. "If life gives you a lemon, make lemonade", is a line of code which I think has helped a lot of souls get through troubling times. "What you don't want others to do to you, don't do to them", is what a Rabbi might tell you. Neither a victim, nor a victimizer be.
Two images of Daryl are emblazoned on the DVD that I have. When I look at these two images, one of Daryl flying an airplane, and the other of him holding a bat, I think of a verse from the Bible: Isaiah 9:6, KJV.
A cyborg without good code is just a robot: See, Jeremiah 23:29, KJV. Fire can melt ice, and ice can shatter rock as water freezes: Daryl and Turtle, are both weak and strong. You need both Truth and Love. Turtle has a "hard shell" and is better able to cope with the world of adults than Daryl is, and so he is protective towards Daryl, not envying Daryl's gifts. But Turtle is also dangerous for he knows a lot of "bad words". And you hope Turtle does not rob Daryl of his innocence. Daryl and Turtle are co-operative, rather than competitive, each has something to teach the other. Turtle is poetic, whereas Daryl is algebraic, with respect to both language and emotion. Yet, they manage to "network", and unlike the adults, are not competitive.
D.A.R.Y.L. April 28, 2008 This is an excellent family movie. We love it! Would recommend it to anyone. There was no problems with delivery.
A boy is just a boy even if he is also a robot April 23, 2008 When I review D.A.R.Y.L. I review and rate is out of nostalgia. It was a movie I thoroughly enjoyed as a kid and I watched it many many times. The movie is about a boy who is really a robot with artificial intelligence and emotions as well. He escapes the research facility where he was created and is adopted by the Andersons, who are scientists (comes in handy when something goes wrong with D.A.R.Y.L. The movie is a bit like Pinocchio, a boy who yearns for that human feeling. The movie deals with issues of love, being a kid and even the right to be. Overanalyzing much for a kid's movie? Maybe. But, I really liked this movie growing up. It is an excellent movie for children that throws in a bit of action here and there. But, it is also very heartfelt and all-in-all a feel good movie.
It is definately better than A.I. - Artificial Intelligence (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)
