3 out of 5 stars TNA Gets It Right The Second Time Around   October 22, 2008

Womens wrestling is something in the United States is one subject in wrestling in which different people have different views on how it should be protrayed as there are periods in wrestling where it's more about how good you look in a bikini (or less) oppossed to how good you can sell a clothesline. However, that period doesn't exist in TNA as it's more about kicking ass than showing it & after an awful first attempt, TNA got the second try right in showcasing these women in their latest Knockout's DVD set.

Now anyone who saw the first one remembers how poorly it came off as a low budget "Divas" DVD, TNA fixed that here as you not only get the interviews with the characters but also real matches showcasing their abilities. You hear from the main players of the knockout division in "out of character" interviews (except Awesome Kong & Rasisha Saeed) along with additional comments from Dixie Carter, Kurt Angle, Christian Cage, and some independent footage of the girls before TNA.

The real highlights here are the matches which include....

TNA Knockouts Gauntlet - This was an average match up as these guantlet's (like the Fight For Your Right earlier) are usually crowded so not everyone has a chance to standout & make an impression. Some moments to look out for were Amazing Kong's domination including destroying Christy Hemme & the final moments between Gail Kim & Roxxi. Good match for what it was.
(Bound For Glory '07)

TNA Womens Champion Gail Kim vs. O.D.B. vs. Roxxi Laveaux vs. Angel Williams (Angelina Love) - Another solid matchup as you can tell these women worked hard & well together...if you can get past the one part in the beginning when Roxxi looked like she was trying to put a trance on the referee. The real standout IMO was O.D.B. as she really had was connecting with the crowd.
(Genesis '07)

Beautiful People vs. O.D.B. & Roxxi - Boy, O.D.B. was just over with the crowd from the start. Despite some of the "WWE divas" elements like the spanking between the knockouts & trying to get the referee involved, this was another match that was just decent & nothing really memorable about it.
(Turning Point '07)

TNA Champion Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong - The story here was David vs. Goliath...except both of them are women as this was one of those "put a storyline over" matches. Kong for the most part dominated Gail Kim who was able to get in a few shots here & there with working on Kong's arm in the beginning & then taking to the air later in the match starting to gain some momentum before Kong recovered & just beat Kim down & refused to stop causing the DQ. The aftermath with Kong beating up the babyface knockouts, the referee, and powerbombing Gail on the chair heavily sold the fact that Kong is a monster. The result was to set up a rematch which I'm sure a majority of people didn't mind.
(Turning Point '07)

No Disqualification Match: TNA Champion Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong = They topped their match from the previous month as again, they used the "David vs. Goliath" formula but delivered a different match. Again, Kong dominated here & just kept overpowering Kim while Gail just kept fighting back. Chairs were used, they brawled on the floor & through the crowd, & even the referee wasn't safe as he got a powerbomb by Kong. Great match with a creative ending that was worth of the "TNA" chants from the crowd.
(Final Resolution '08)

TNA Champion Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong - They had a difficult task that only a few handful of wrestlers can possibly do & that's top their previous matches that are highly praised by fans & critics. They were able to pull off a great performance again using the David vs. Goliath method along with revisting moments from their previous encounters but third time is the charm in the end, Awesome Kong wins the TNA Knockouts Championship & really establishes herself as a female version of how "Big Van Vader" was in WCW.
("Impact" Jan. '08)

The Jay Lethal/So Cal Val Wedding - Holy SummerSlam '91 Batman! Seriously, this entire storyline has been done very similar to the Randy/Liz storyline from the proposal, "Oh Yeah!" acceptance by Val, and even Lethal dressing in the same type of outfit Savage did at the SummerSlam wedding. However, anyone who watched TNA over the past couple of months (including those who edit the video packages together) knew what was coming when the best man Sonjay Dutt stopped the wedding & turned heel on Lethal before getting his own beating by the groomsmen. The heel turn was great but for him to get laid out by the legends right afterwards killed it & turned this turned into a wrestlecrap segment. At least you got to see old school legends & names from the past like Kamala, Jake "The Snake" Roberts (complete with snake), Koko B. Ware, and George "The Animal" Steele who of course munched on his favorite snack...the turnbuckle.
(Slammiversary '08)

Makerover Battle Royal/Ladder Match - All the knockouts are in the battle royal & the final two will wrestle in a Ladder Match with the winner getting a title shot while the loser gets her head shaved...except for Gail Kim who won immunity so if she loses then the last knockout eliminated in the battle royal would get her shaved. Just like any time TNA has a multiperson match that has more than one stage (ala "Queen Of The Cage" at LockDown), they got the first stage over with pretty quickly as the only thing noteworthy in the battle royal was Khan tossing Hemme out but instead of straight to the floor, Hemme hit the apron hip first on the way down. The Ladder Match was between Gail & Roxxi with Angelina Love being the one who should get shaved if Gail loses so she constantly kept interfearing with Velvet Sky getting involved as well. The battle royal part wasn't anything special as it was just a way to shove all the knockouts onto the PPV but the Ladder Match was just bad because of the constant interfearence from "The Beautiful People" (TNA can't think of a better name than that?) made this match a dud. The crowd was chanting "Fire Russo" afterwards during the headshaving but with the booking of this match, you could see why.
(Sacrifice '08)

Gail Kim & O.D.B. vs. Awesome Kong & Raisha Saeed - Some people may like this match but I honestly just didn't care for it as Kong wasn't heavily involved in the match while Raeed was able to showcase some skill in the ring that she was well known for under his previous alias (Cheerleader Melissa) but it was missing that "it" factor for me to make this a standout match.
(LockDown '08)

TNA Champion Awesome Kong vs. Taylor Wilde - This was part of Kong's series of challenges where she would challenge other female wrestlers/fans into the ring to defeat her. Taylor failed in previous attempts but she was able to finally sneak out a victory here to become the new champion using the "David vs. Goliath" storytelling here. Unfortunally with the other matches featuring Kong vs. Kim that used that exact same formula, this came off weak in comparison.
("Impact" July '08)

Now when this DVD was already finalized & had already finished production, Gail Kim made the decision to leave TNA, since Gail was put in the role the of the top babyface for the division to be marketed around...TNA decided as a farewell to add a bonus disc featuring a short audio interview with Gail about leaving along with what turned out to be her final match. Now keep in mind that she made the decision to leave AFTER this match was already taped a week earlier.

Street Fight Match: Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong - Just like I stated in their last singles match, they had the near-impossible task of topping or coming close to their previous series of matches & they didn't in this case...but that doesn't mean the match was bad by any means as it's was good to watch as Gail attempts some innovative moves for a match we're not used to seeing involving women. In retrospect, it was a good match to see Gail make her exit on.

Now in the end, I feel like some of the matches/segments they picked should have been left out as they weren't the greatest showcasing of the Knockouts or the fact that they were picked over better encounters that were left out such as the Destination X 3 way match with Kong vs. Kim vs. O.D.B. was tons better than the Lockdown tag while the wrestlecrap that was the So Cal Val wedding could have given time to showcase matches featuring the Knockouts that happened before the title was created like the series of matches between Jacqueline & Gail Kim (LockDown cage or their Impact street fight in which Jacqueline got her front teeth knocked out), the Against All Odds match from the between the original TNA knockout in Traci Brooks vs. Payton Banks since that was the other long term knockout feud in TNA outside of the Championship picture, or the fun six WOman tag from Slammiversary. This gets 3 stars because I enjoyed the interviews while the Kong/Kim series will be remembered as a "lost classic" series of womens matches while the rest of the match selection was really hit & miss for me. But in the end...if your a fan of TNA, the knockouts, or good wrestling regardless of the gender then you'll want to give this a try...otherwise, you can skip it because there's really nothing "blow away" on this set that will change the mind of anyone who already has their mind made up about womens wrestling in a negative way.

4 out of 5 stars TNA definitely made womens wrestling alot more interesting   October 18, 2008
No one can argue against the marvelous job TNA has done with womens wrestling. TNA's women division gave new life to womens wrestling but made the sport even more interesting to watch. It is very hard not to respect these women. They really do give it their all and some of their matches are on par with the mens matches. I give TNA more credit for displaying the womens ability to actually work in the ring and leave the bra and pantie matches at the door. Matches like that normally drag down great ppv's to just good or above average. I often wonder what this division would look like if Lita and Jazz were ever added into their ranks.

The documentary begins with the TNA President Dixie Carter giving her thoughts on their start and being patient with pushing them. Kurt Angle and Christian also add their thoughts as well. You will hear form most of the Knockouts speaking out of character and get to know something about them. They speak about their starts, hobbies, and inspirations. Superstars like ODB don't sound too far away from her character at all. Others have some pretty interesting backgrounds like Sharmell, Rhaka Khan, and Roxxi. Roxxi gets pretty detailed about her injury during the Ladder Match with Gail Kim.

Even though the interview portions are very good overall. I was still slightly disappointed. I wanted to know more about Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed. Kong is only described by other Knockouts to include Raisha is in character the entire time. But I really couldn't stop laughing during her interview. The DVD is laid out with a match following some of the interviews. I will admit that this format is starting to grow on me a bit. It gives me a break from both the matches plus the interviews. So, overall I found the interviews to be very good and the matches are in their full entirety with entrances which is a huge plus. Some of the Knockouts entrances are very cheeky and I love to see them all.

The match list is as follows:
Bound for Glory 2007
The match that started it all
Through out the DVD most of the Knockouts refer to this match as their memorable moment. And you will find out why.

Knockouts Gauntlet Match
This match was to decide the very first TNA womens champion. It used royal rumble rules and the last two would have a one fall match. My take on this match is still the same and it's still just as good as when I first saw it. Most of them took some sick punishment and the last two worked a very good one on one match. I still feel that the right woman won. 4.5/5

Genesis 2007
Fatal 4 way for the TNA Knockouts Championship
Gail Kim(C) vs. ODB vs. Roxxi Laveaux vs. Angel Williams
This was Gail Kim's first title defense. This match can be weak for some who is not a fan of women's matches. But I think it was good. They put on a good show with some decent spots. A little high risk and decent wrestling. But ODB's charasmatic character got the crowd into it alot. The camera work got in a few booty shots. 3.5/5

TNA Turning Point 2007
Roxxi Laveaux & ODB vs. Velvet Sky & Angelina Love
A match that was more comedic and it has grown on me a bit after watching it again. Roxxi and Angelina were clearly the work horses concerning wrestling. ODB worked her wild gimmick and you can see clearly how it's over with the crowd. She tags herself in the match, the craziest way I have ever seen. 3/5

TNA Knockout Championship
Gail Kim(C) vs. Awesome Kong I
These two had a rivalry that now stands as a classic. This meeting here to me was the weakest of their championship encounters. But they still delivered an action packed match and did a good job telling the David and Goliath story. The ending worked out pretty well and this is another match that seems a little better to me now then before. 3.5/5

Final Resolution 2008
No DQ for the TNA Knockouts Championship
Gail Kim(C) vs. Awesome Kong II
The best match in their rivalry to me. This was very brutal for a womens match. They took full advantage of the no DQ rule. They rumbled through the stands, chairs came into play plus ko'ed refs. I truly believe that I wouldn't be honest with myself if I gave this match anything less than a 5. For a womens match, it was just too good as far as I'm concerned. 5/5

TNA "Impact!" 1-10-08
TNA Knockouts Championship
Gail Kim(C) vs. Awesome Kong III
I'm not too sure if their will ever be a rivalry by two women as good as this one anytime soon. Even though it wasn't better than their previous encounter. They still put together a very good match. Surpassing a classic match is very hard to do. But what makes the follow ups interesting is keeping it fresh. They used different methods to make the match interesting such as learning from past outings. Things that worked before didn't work here. This match also gets alot of credit for being The Main Event. And that's saying alot considering that it's a womens match. 4/5

Slammiversary 2008
The Wedding of Black Machismo & So Cal Val
I won't even rate this. There were matches that could have taken this spot. I really don't see why this was even added. For the simple fact. I believe it has less to do with the Knockouts DVD and more to do with a predictable heel turn. An uneffective and lazy heel turn at that.

Sacrifice 2008
Makeover Battle Royal Ladder Match
Winner receives title shot. Loser loses her hair
Velvet Sky vs. Angelina Love vs. Roxxi vs. Gail Kim vs. ODB vs. Jacquline vs. Traci Brooks vs. Christy Hemme vs. Salinas

This match follows the basic rules of the battle royal. The last two in the ring begin a Ladder Match. I'm going to be straight up and say the battle royal portion was pretty much boring. It wasn't really special. The ladder match was pretty good for a womens match. Some very good spots and nice twist. The last two took some punishment and the ending was something to see. It's always tragic to see a woman lose her hair. 3.5/5

Lockdown 2008
Tag Team Grudge Match
Awesome Kong & Raisha Saeed vs. Gail Kim & ODB
This was a pretty good match with this being Raisha's debut match. There were some nice spots and pretty good wrestling. Raisha actually has some type of skill. The ending was pretty good. 3.5/5

TNA "Impact!" 7-9-08
$25,000 Challenge and Knockout Championship
Awesome Kong(C) vs. Taylor Wilde
This was just the usual underdog coming in trying to overcome impossible odds. The match was good but doesn't come close to any of the matches during the feud with Kim. In fact, after seeing this again I just found it to be a mediocre rehash. 3.25/5

Disk 2
This portion contains Gail Kims last interview with her speaking through the audio. Covering her start, first title win and how much passion she has for wrestling plus the locker room. Also added is her last match.

Gail Kim's Last Match
TNA Impact 8-21-08
Street Fight
Gail Kim vs. Awesome Kong

A very wise opponent to pick on her way out. These two usually work magic but this match wasn't as great as their earlier outings. The match wasn't bad. They had a good fight and it was brutal. Gail Kim was pretty innovative and I see why she'll be missed. But I think this match could have turned into something special had it been on ppv. Still, it was one heck of a way to go out. 3.25/5

Overall, this is a great release that could satisfy most wrestling fans. If you're not a fan of womens wrestling at all. Then you really shouldn't waste your time or money with this. If you already hate it, then I seriously doubt this will turn you into one. But I highly recommend this to women interested in becoming wrestlers. Some of the interviews could be inspirational for you.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first release!!!   October 10, 2008
I just got this awesome dvd today. After seeing the first tna women's dvd a few years ago, I have to say this one packs a punch. If you are a fan of tna, wwe and or a fan of pro. wrestling, I highly recommend owning this dvd.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money!   September 26, 2008

There is no doubt that over the past 12 months, TNA has taken women's wrestling to a whole new level with the addition of their Knockouts division and now the Knockout's story is told in the latest TNA DVD release "Knocked Out : Pro Wrestling's greatest women's division"

Knocked Out is a fitting title for this DVD because for once, TNA knocked it out of the park when it comes to a solid DVD package. A nearly 3 and a half hour main feature accompanied with a special bonus disc featuring "Gail Kim's Final TNA Interview" has finally taken TNA DVD production to another level.

The main feature offers interview segments with every member of the Knockout division , with the exception of Awesome Kong, who instead is covered by the other knockouts, each of them speak on their beginnings in the wrestling business, what the knockouts division has meant to them, why the knockouts division is better than the Divas, and even the personal stuff like their personal hobbies. Peppered throughout the interview segments is actual photo's and video footage of the knockouts from their pre TNA days, which is something that TNA has only included on their DVD's on the rare occasion. Another improvement is the natural progression of the feature, Often on previous TNA DVD's featuring interview segments you would be interrupted by a constantly repeating 5 seconds of music with a graphics board to introduce the next segment, this time however you have a smooth transition cutting with just a graphic board. For anyone who saw the original TNA Knockouts DVD from a few years ago this is no comparison as it blows the original out of the water and uses a very different format.

Also in the main feature is some of the best matches from the knockouts division over the past year, beginning with the obvious choice of the "match that started it all" the TNA knockouts battle royal from Bound For Glory 07 which crowned Gail Kim as the first ever Knockouts champion, Next up is Roxxi Laveaux vs Gail Kim vs Angel Williams vs ODB from Genesis 07, Then we have the two knockouts matches from Turning Point 07 in The Beautiful People vs Roxxi Laveaux/ODB, and the first battle between Awesome Kong & Gail Kim, which is followed up by their subsequent battles at Final Resolution and Impact in January of this year. The So Cal Val-Jay Lethal wedding from Slammiversary 08 is next up, followed by the Sacrifice 08 Knockouts Makeover Battle Royale in which the loser had her head shaved bald. The Lockdown Tag Team Grudge match between Gail Kim / ODB and Awesome Kong /Raisha Saeed as well as the Awesome Kong vs Taylor Wilde 25,000$ Challenge for the knockouts title from Impact wraps up the match lineup..

The DVD bonus disc features Gail Kim's final TNA Interview, which is an audio only interview set to photos and videos of the knockout which was recorded on August 21st 2008 at 4:30pm, Running 3 minutes in length, Kim expresses that she has been debating with one of the hardest decisions of her life and had made the tough choice to leave the company. She goes onto speak of her favorite memories of her run in the company. There is obviously no mention of the WWE and why she chose to leave, and when I got the DVD, I wondered why a bonus disc hyping her departure was included, obviously it was added late in production thus the need for it to be on a second disc. A bonus match is included on this disc as well as Gail Kim takes on Awesome Kong in a street fight on Impact. This would turn out to be her final match on television for TNA and keeping with wrestling tradition she goes out on her back, Whether or not she returns is unknown at this point but if she does depart to return to the WWE then this is a nice added touch to complete the package because the documentary portion does put over Kim often as a huge part of the success of the division and the impact she has had on those around her.

I'd definitely recommend picking this DVD up, its one of the best DVD's ive seen from TNA. Recently it was announced that TNA was near completion of it fully featured and dedicated production studio, and if this DVD was any indication of where they are going then TNA has finally "crossed the line" into a major player in the wrestling dvd market.
