Far from Presley's worst April 7, 2008 I was surprised to read all the bad reviews of this particular film. Sure, this isn't a 'good' movie, but when considered as part of Elvis Presley's filmography, "Stay Away Joe" is darn near brilliant. At least you can tell Elvis is having a good time doing a very different type of role in a more contemporary style of film. And there's even several genuine laughs in the movie. As far as stereotypes and what not...big deal. This isn't great meaningful artistic symbolic cinema. This is a low-budget 1968 Elvis comedy. To take offense at anything going on in this or any other Elvis picture is just insane. Nearly all of Presley's movies were lightweight, harmless and dumb, and if you didn't realize that, then steer clear.
ARGUABLY ELVIS' WORST MOVIE EVER... January 5, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
... and Burgess Meredith, with the ridiculous make-up job in an attempt to make him look Native American, isn't going to fool anybody... why didn't they just get the real thing, like Chief Dan George?
With a Spanish stepmother who actually looks like Elvis and could believably pass for his real mother, why would they cast short, weaselly Burgess Meredith as the father??? For sure, the plotline should have been tweaked here and there, along with some sexier-looking chicks and a better Elvis soundtrack.
Stay Away Joe December 12, 2007 Elvis, Elvis, Elvis! Need I say more??? I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my dad. Dad's in is 70s now and had never seen this E. P. movie! I had though and knew how funny it was so I purchased it for him. We had an early Christmas and we all sat around and watched the video and we laughed and laughed at Elvis and Burgess Meredith, and all "Joe's" Elvis' rowdy friends in the movie. They were always destroying something! It's fun and it's Elvis, what more could you want?
STAY AWAY ! April 10, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just like the title says...STAY AWAY ! It would be a great movie for insomniacs as it is sure to put anyone to sleep. And to the powers to be...please don't ever let this escape onto DvD.
More than 100 minutes of pure fun ! June 25, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I must say I decided to review this film because it had so much negative reviews. I LOVE this film. It's pure fun and completely crazy and it's fine like that. If you want to watch an art film, don't watch an Elvis Presley film. I would really like this film to be released on DVD. I don't understand it's not on DVD yet as you can find horrible Elvis films like HARUM SCARUM or FRANKIE AND JOHNNY already on DVD. As I'm writing this review the following Elvis films have not been released on DVD yet: KISSIN' COUSINS, TICKLE ME, LIVE A LITTLE, STAY AWAY JOE and ELVIS ON TOUR. With the exception of COUSINS, the other four films are among Elvis's best. STAY AWAY JOE is a fun film to watch but it's sure that you won't like it if you don't like Elvis. So if you don't like Elvis, stay away!
