Get yourself a snappy title and a couple of marquee names (however disreputable) and you might just snag your no-budget movie a national release--as Zombie Strippers colorfully proves. The names in question belong to porn star Jenna Jameson and Freddie Krueger himself, Robert Englund, both of whom look quite comfortable in this sleazy milieu. As the title suggests (well, "suggests" might be a mild word), there has been an outbreak of the undead in a strip club, with strippers actually improving their onstage antics after they've become zombies. (Given the number of implants on display, it's a wonder the zombies didn't keel over from silicone poisoning.) Englund is the proprietor of the place, Jameson is a star dancer, and a couple of actresses in the "nice girl" roles don't have to take their tops off, although almost everybody else does. Writer-director Jay Lee fills the movie with political gags and a bunch of philosophy references (Jameson reads Nietzsche, the locale is Sartre, Nebraska), all of which play like a lame attempt to distinguish his movie as something other than a puerile horror-comedy. Only thing is, when you try to disguise the fact that you've made a puerile horror-comedy, it kind of takes the oomph out of both the horror and the comedy. The political jibes are about as feeble as those in Southland Tales, but at least Zombie Strippers is shorter. Shot on video, it looks atrocious, but perhaps that doesn't matter very much. --Robert Horton

2 out of 5 stars Well, I Like the Title Anyway...And the Ping-Pong Trick Part   November 16, 2008
Pay close attention to the film's title. It is "Zombie Strippers," not "Zombies vs. Strippers." Silly as it is, "Zombie Strippers" is the title of the film starring Jenna Jameson and Robert Englund because here strip dancers become zombies and they dance on stage before the crowd of cheering males in a strip club. I mean it. It is a one-joke movie, of which joke could have been turned into something much funnier than as it is, by someone like Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, creator team of "Shaun of the Dead." I only wish that they have directed the film.

Jenna Jameson plays Kat, a strip dancer. Robert Englund is a greedy owner of the club, who is more than happy to see the audiences excited over the un-dead dancers (whose dancing gets sexier as the film goes on) even though some of the "lucky" males haven't returned from the backstage.

The situation is absurd, but I think it is exactly the point. Unfortunately we need someone who can turn absurdity into comedy here. "Zombie Strippers" suffers slack direction, especially its earlier part where Robert Englund does not appear. Clearly Robert Englund is having a good time, and watching him as the sleazy (and cowardly) owner is fun, but the film is only sporadically funny with too scanty supply of jokes or ideas.

"Zombie Strippers" is a comedy in which Robert Englund's club owner is named "Ian Essko" and his club "Rhino." I confess I didn't at first get the joke playing on the name of the playwright Ionesco and one of his plays, and I still don't know why it has to be named like that. I was impressed more with "ping-pong tricks." I want more of them.

3 out of 5 stars Talent here but issues abound.   November 14, 2008

So here is that film that was playing at all the independent art house city theaters that everyone heard about. Well, did you miss out when you missed it on the big screen? No, and yes.

Well, here's a film that is really well done, and when I say really well done, I mean these film makers are really talented. The lighting of the film, the non-CG effects, the editing, the camera work, the directing, the acting (generally), makeup, the wardrobe ... this is all truly top quality film making at its best. I cannot say how impressive it all was. But does this make an entertaining film? Absolutely not! The screenplay was pretty pathetic, the story is already dated, and the attempt at comedic and political satire fails miserably.

The story takes place in the future where the 43rd president of the US becomes effectively a benevolent dictator with an oligarchy around him. A company owned by this president's cabinet is making some sort of virus to make a super army with no feelings (nothing new here) and one of the scientists is some sort of sociopath and lets the virus out in the complex. A para-military group come in to take care of the mess and in the process one of them is bitten by a zombie and escapes next door to a gentleman's club. Here he infects one of the lead dancers. As the hours go by being a zombie stripper she and the other eventually infected dancers get a cult following, business booms, but the side effect of having customers eaten or turned into flesh eating zombies makes capitalism questionable indeed (another lame political commentary here????)

So what do we have? Well, the screenplay is somehow trying to make a political commentary on the Bush administration while also trying to make a horror comedy. What happens is we get a bunch of very lame jokes (a guy that is so infatuated with a zombie stripper he writes out a check instead of giving dollar bills, unrealistic reactions and actions, a mexican custodian that acts stereotypical, some lame sex jokes that are completely juvenile, etc.) And the political commentary was completely a joke (and I mean in a very bad way). It already makes the film dated, it didn't feel like it was placed right within the context of the film, and the points made were again just juvenile.

One thing that always makes me steam over bad horror comedies is the characters are not supposed to know they are in a comedy. Great horror comedies show the characters unaware they are in such a film and make the film seamless. Here we don't have that and as a result we have caricatures rather than characters.

Generally, besides the horrible screenplay (which unfortunately is the thing necessary for a good film), the film is well done technically as well as acted. For such a film, the blood and boobs crowd are probably waiting for me to mention this: yes, this film is loaded with both. We get great death scenes, buckets of blood, fantastic gore makeup, and plenty of full frontal nudity and nude shots. And the women in this film are absolutely beautiful as would be expected in a film portraying exotic dancers.

So do I recommend this film? To be honest, yes, it is an absolute riot for a friday night B-film no matter the short comings, bad jokes, and lousy screenplay. The film is just well done technically (though the CG zombie kills were mediocre). The film makers here are truly talents and have a long future ahead of them. Now if they could hire a screenwriter rather than write their own film, then we'd have had a cult classic on our hands. This film will probably become one anyway because of such cult heroes as Robert Englund and Jenna Jameson never mind the film type and topic.

Last issue, the extras on this DVD are great. And the DVD is top notch.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty limp horror comedy(in more ways than one)   November 9, 2008
Zombie Strippers....great title.
How can a title like that not sell?

Well, once the laughter dies down after reading that title, you realize there's a movie to go along with it,and that's the problem.

It's hard to screw up a film like "Zombie Strippers',but the filmmakers do a very good job of doing just that.

Many other viewers have noted the film's synoposis(Did you really NEED one?),so I'll just critique the film.

The film has an identity crisis, not quite sure if it's outrageous horror comedy or softcore porn, and never do the two meet together in an appropiate manner.

The major problems are:

The filmmakers try to make a political statement with this film, never realizing that politics have no place in a film called "Zombie Strippers".
Most of the humor is outdated,trendy,"Bush-bashing",the kind you see on college campuses, and it is pretty stale already.

The humorous idea of strippers who become better strippers as zombies is funny, but never comes off(Just why DO the guys in the film find rotting corpses sexy,is beyond me...it's NEVER explained).

The comic action suffers because it has NO believability.

I understand this is a comedy, but for most good comedy(and horror) to work, there has to be some root in reality.

The special forces team in the film is just corny and lame, and ultimately, characterless.

The guns they are using are OBVIOUSLY phony, and that's something of a distraction as well.

Most of the cast is painfully unfunny, even though veterans like Robert Englund, clearly try.

There is NO main character,or audience identification figure, either, which makes the experiance even more bizarre.

How about the T and A?

The girls are all generally attractive and well built, but nudity isn't as frequent as one would expect as this film follows the hollywood rules of "good girls don't take off there clothes",and that hurts that large portion of the audience.Only really a third(or less) of the chicks actually show anything...and mainly as corpses!

It also probally dosen't help either that it's just GROSS to see Jenna Jameson and company as NUDE,rotting corpses.

The blood and gore is mainly lame CGI,so gorehounds will probally be disapointed there as well.
On another hand, the zombie makeups are pretty good, and there clearly a few homages to the works of Tom Savini.

A few laughs are on hand, but to really appreciate this film would take a high level of inebriation...and I mean ALOT of booze, guys!

For the frat boys, this film may be a pleasant diversion.
For horror fans, you've seen funnier, bloodier and sexier.
For skin fans....eh.Okay.Nothing great.

Overall, nothing to highly reccomend, could have been alot better, really.
But what the hell did I expect with a film called "Zombie Strippers',anyway?

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what you'd hope it is...   November 7, 2008

It's called ZOMBIE STRIPPERS. You get ZOMBIE STRIPPERS. It doesn't always make sense, and the production values (especially the low-fi HD it's shot on) aren't always the best, but this flick delivers by being fast, fun, gory, violent, silly, and chock full o' nudity. So many would-be exploitation films are dull and talky - not this one. The performances are also quite good in an over-the-top sorta way - just like everything else here.

Director Jay Lee makes a REAL grindhouse flick with today's technology and sensibility. It'd be great to see what he might actually be able to accomplish with a real budget. This uber-cheapo movie is uber-cheapo, but it's still a pretty dang good ride.
