Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential video
A ringing instance of a sequel far outstripping its predecessor, Sergio Leone's For a Few Dollars More takes the lethal antihero from A Fistful of Dollars, gives him both a rival and an adversary worthy of sharing a gun-blazing corrida, and ratchets up the stylization to something approaching grandeur. This time the Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood) is a bounty hunter whose desert Southwest killing ground is suddenly crowded by the presence of an older, black-clad shootist (Lee Van Cleef). Individually and together, they terminate sundry grotesques while closing in on their biggest quarry, a memorably insane bandit called El Indio (Gian Maria Volonte is brilliant). There's just enough plot to imbue Van Cleef with genuine mystery, a dark avenging angel from a lost past whose pull would supply the emotional core of Leone's later masterworks Once upon a Time in the West and Once upon a Time in America. Leone's bravura widescreen compositions are breathtaking, and Ennio Morricone's music score--tinged with lunatic religiosity--is his first great one. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Dollars Trilogy or How to Shoot A Friend's Hat   December 24, 2008
The wait was quite long for the remaining 3 remastered Leone movies. These DVDs had been out in the UK/Region 2 for since 18 April 2005, 2+ years (5 June 2007.)

For A Few Dollars More is the best of the 3 Dollars films and a great "buddy" film. I love the actors: Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Gian Marie Volante, Klaus Kinski, the actor who would later play Tuco's brother, and the man who hates trains. Mortimer's arsenal is great as is his safe cracking prowess. The flashback scenes are great also. The towns and sets are great with the larger budget being well spent. The Morricone score is great. The extras are pretty good if less cohesive than other DVD supplements out there.

The picture is great on my 24" flat screen tube TV fed through component inputs and shown 4:9 letterbox. It is much better than the first MGM single disc releases which I would assume were ported over from laser disc. It is also the best looking of the Dollars films. The Lowry process has made them as new or maybe even better than when originally released (not alive when in initial release.) I hope a 16:9 progressive scan capable TV will make the image that much better. The sound is good. I do not have a 5.1 capable receiver, just as well with the new Blu-Ray audio options making older units closer to obsolescence. (I can't wait to listen to Leon: The Professional and Patriot Games among others in DTS someday and hope that Ronin and Braveheart will come out in DTS at some point.)

The 2 disc white Amaray case with slipcase is much better than the bulky case that came with The Good, The Bad... in 2004. The only problem would be getting white replacement cases at a reasonable cost.

If you have not seen Once Upon A Time In The West, get the 2 disc SE now, it is cheap to buy. The musical theme for Jill with Edda Dell'Orso's voice is angelic. It ranks up there with the Ecstasy of Gold and the theme of the Confederate carriage in the desert from GBU. The movie is Leone's best along with Once Upon A Time In America (which has some disturbing scenes of violence and vulgarity. It is not for children or gentle adults.)

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars out of 4   December 18, 2008
The Bottom Line:

For a Few Dollars More could have used tighter pacing, especially in its draggy third act; it's a must-see for fans of Leone or Eastwood, but not a terribly accomplished film in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars van cleef steals the show   December 1, 2008
this movie goes down in history for many reasons, but mainly because Lee Van Cleef totally stole the show from Clint Eastwood. The way Van cleef played the character was so cool, with untouchable confidence. You never knew what to expect from him. One of the best scenes is when van cleef confronts Klaus Kinski(hunchback) in the bar and hardly a word is said but still he is very effective because of his presence. He is not just a tough guy but very smart also. This dvd is the european region 2 disc and surprisingly there is no extra footage like in the GBUgly disc. Harry Dean Stanton is in the TV opening footage with a guy whose face you don't see that is supposed to be Eastwood but is not. What a beautifully perfect film.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant film!   November 4, 2008
This is fantastic movie, a real epic tale of bounty hunters and their ruthless prey. The performances are outstanding and the film benefits hugely from a brilliant turn by Lee Van Cleef. Clint's on top form and the film is magnificent.

4 out of 5 stars The Hunt For Indio   October 10, 2008
For A Few Dollars More, the second Leone film of the dollars trilogy with Clint Eastwood,Lee Van Cleef and Gian Maria Volonte, who gives a riveting performance as the sadistic gang leader,El Indio,a stoner with an ambition to heist the largest bank in El Paso,as Eastwood and Van Cleef, both bounty hunters plan to hunt down Indio's cutthroat gang and split the winnings,as the plot thickens, bullets are flying everywhere eliminating anyone who stands in the way of collecting a bounty or a bankroll, time is winding down to the final climax, another classic Sergio Leone film.
