4 out of 5 stars Topkapi in real life   February 15, 2006

This movie was originally named "Live a Little, Steal a Lot" and is a somewhat distorted recreation of the real life break in of the Museum of Natural History in New York City by South Florida daredevils Allan Kuhn, played by Robert Conrad, and Jack Murphy. Presumably the movie was renamed Murph the Surf due to the individual notoriety of Jack Roland Murphy, who was gifted as a concert violinist, university varsity tennis player, Surfing Hall of Famer, and after a long stint in prison for a later murder in Florida, his conversion to Christianity and subsequent release from prison in the 1980's who has now become a gifted prison evangelist and leader in the Bill Glass founded "Champions for Life" international prison ministry.

Murph once admitted that the Peter Ustinov thriller "Topkapi", which came out in August of 1964 and starred Peter Ustinov in a movie about a complex jewel theft in an Istanbul museum, inspired Jack Murphy and his friends to pull a similar stunt in New York City two months later.

A good movie to see, featuring a young Robert Conrad as Allan Kuhn, who served as an advisor to the movie, with the result of making Kuhn more likeable than Murph, this movie might appeal to fans of actor Robert Conrad, but also to fans of Jack Murphy's present evangelistic ministry.

And believe me, when Murph the Surf comes to town to preach, a LOT of people have heard of him for his prior exploits.
