Amazon.com Strange but captivating, Tony Hawk's Boom Boom Sabotage is a virtual adventure built around a singular idea: using motion-capture technology to turn skateboarding stunts into impressive computer animation. The weird story finds a ghoulish but down-on-its-luck circus fallen on hard times and unable to book a performance in the town of Lincolnville's civic arena. The ringleader, Grimley, conspires to sabotage an upcoming performance by Tony Hawk in the facility, and put on his own circus act for an audience awaiting the skateboarding legend. Hawk (who provides his own voice) and a couple of his buddies are kidnapped, and the only people who know it are several teen slackers determined to rescue their hero. The barely human villain and his cohorts, good for a laugh, are a little reminiscent of the Blue Meanies in Yellow Submarine, and the adolescent heroes are likable in their unformed way. Plentiful sequences of skateboarding action (on a halfpipe, railings, and steps, etc.) are the real star, however, and look pretty good digitally translated. --Tom Keogh

I'm not into sk8ing, but that's an amaising sk8ters fairytale October 19, 2007 Well... what can I say... this is a movie that made me feel like a happy kid... amasing animation technics... motion capture of skateboard riding and beyond... combined with a great story and lots of nice humor. A big FAT BRAVO for everyone involved !!! Respect.
Painfully dumb to watch November 19, 2006 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am not certain just what type of narcotics were required to write this movie, but I certainly would require some narcotics to continue watching this movie.
Tuned into CARTOON NETWORK, have watched 30 minutes of this movie (did some GOOGLE'ing to see who made it) and am now ashamed that MAINFRAME ENTERTAINMENT (the makers of the brilliant REBOOT animated series) had anything to do with this computer-rendered movie. Wow, a movie about aimless goal-lacking skateboarders. Toss in some boring over-gesturing over-exclaiming "freaks" and the movie is just prime material for mocking (if sadly it wasn't a tedious boredom-fest). I would sum this movie up to be less interesting than listening in on one side of a cellphone conversation about grocery shopping.
On the other hand, it seems like there is the unwritten goal of creating humiliating circumstances for all of the featured characters every 10 minutes. Wow, this movie is simply embarrassing to view. So if you *love* lots of unnecessary jump cuts (music video style), boring skateboard antics, and diving headfirst into a deep pool of being unentertained well, this is your movie. I would say the worst character in the movie is the blue-shirted severely retarded boy with the blue cap who has random physical spasms and bizarre pointing issues and placing importance on one-word slogans. Beyond that I could imagine perhaps that this movie was made to be a tool of torture for the secret CIA prisons under the criminal George W. Bush and his anti-American cohorts. That might explain the inane horribly boring stuff I've just watched for last 45 minutes.
EXCELLENT Movie!!....but NOT for young children! November 18, 2006 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I totally understand how kids idolize Tony Hawk...my 8 year old son LOVES him! So when Cartoon Network featured this movie tonight, my son was totally captivated by it! I watched it with him, and we enjoyed it immensely. The problem I have is that it really SHOULD have a rating of PG-13. Some of the humor is adult themed, and the villians are very scary. I can't tell you yet if he had nightmares from it, but I highly doubt he will...I'm just writing this review so that if you have a younger child, you should be aware that this movie might not be well suited for them. Otherwise, the characters, skateboarding moves and clothes were EXCELLENT. I loved watching this with my kid, but that's what I'd suggest...watch it WITH your child.
GREAT CG SKATEBOARDING, BUT, DVD IS NOT FOR CHILDREN October 13, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Okay, first of all just to fill you in about me, even though, you don't care... I can't skate, but me and my kids love watching Tony Hawk and his touring team skate, in fact I have most of his tour videos, and the movie Gleaming the Cube with Chris Slater, my kids... they have the complete series of Tony Hawk's PS2 games and the 3 Tricks & Tips box set. Okay now to review this cg movie. Parents, I know kids loves Tony Hawk... but, beware! This is a Not Rated cartoon DVD it has a Japanese Anime concept. Before I let my kids watch any videos with adult theme in it specially skateboarding movies I take the point to either read online reviews about the movie or I go watch it myself first, and me watching the whole video, this one is not for kids, this is for teenagers, my rating on this is PG-13, with all the harsh remarks, screaming and yelling, gross humor like drinking somebody else's snut in a cup, decaying toe nails swarmed by flies, guy getting smack on the nuts (can I say that?), kids doing stunts that could kill them in the real world, etc... Motion capture is a very old concept in animation, it was used even when cartoon characters were just drawn manually and then transfered to cells, and I say, it was superbly done here, the 3d skate shots are great, watching the cg Tony skate you can tell that it is the real life Tony who was skating. The best video, so far, that Tony Hawk produced which is kids friendly is the 3 Tricks & Tips series. The Clown villains were created very grossingly scary, ugly & redneck looking (What becuase I'm ugly-looking I'm a villain, stereo-typing?), that a 6 years old watching this will most likely either cry, turn off the tv or get nightmares. Kids are the mass Tony Hawk followers, yes, even a 6 years old loves Tony I know, I have one, this could have been a 5 star for me, if they made the video watchable for a 6 years old, at least. I know the heroes are teenage kids, but, this is still a cartoon, and cartoons and kids go together, leave the anime or manga concept to the Japanese. I'm looking forward to a tamer follow-up series of this cg-3d-anime, it's got a potential, and I'll probably buy a remake of this feature dvd for my kids, without the gross humor, monster looking freak-of-the-week clowns, and the rest of the stuff I mentioned about the PG-13 rating. Get a new editor, too, there's an editing screw-up in the movie when the kids were video taping the rail trick while DJ is being kidnapped by the crooks, the kids already caught it on the videocam when DJ is getting thrown into the camper, and then later on when the kids are aiming to stop them DJ is getting thrown again into the truck. Sorry, Tony but I got use to watching every scene in your videos while waiting for an awesome trick to happen, specially when you're the one skating. We're also waiting for the DVD release of the Live Boom Boom show... the making is not that great, we want the entirety of the actual show not behind it. MORE POWER, TONY! (You're not getting too old for these.)
Disappointed September 25, 2006 I ordered this for my 7 year old son, who is a huge fan of Tony Hawk. Tony Hawk has been a great role model for my son, who wears a helmet when skating/biking, gets up and tries stunts again and again, all because Tony Hawk shows that practice and safety are important when learning any trick. When he falls, he will tell me that he has to "get back up and try again, like Tony Hawk does". He proudly wears Hawk clothing, as do his friends. We have been to the Boom Boom Huck Jam tour, and were impressed with the clean language and family friendly environment. So of course, on the day it was released, we bought this movie for my son as a birthday gift. This movie, however, was dark, creepy, and a complete disappointment. It should be rated for teens, and should not have an unrated status. It is similar more to the "Nightmare Before Christmas". The "carnies" act evil throughout the show (I am not exagerating, either!). The ending was kid friendly, but the rest of it truely should be PG 13.As "Hawk" fans who look to Tony and his crew as role models for kids (and skating is GREAT exercise!), we found this movie to be a waste of time and money. However, his skate video games are really good! I guess with everything else that comes out of Tony Hawk, being excellent, we expected this to be as well...
