Amazon.com What if you could go back to a favored film, TV series or fairy tale to see just what "happily ever after" really looked like? That's the delicious premise behind To the Manor Born: Silver Anniversary Special. The well-loved Brit-com, which aired from 1979-1981, ended with the marriage of the genteel but newly impoverished Audrey fforbes-Hamilton (the puckish Penelope Keith) and supermarket baron Richard DeVere, after many months of a peculiarly British off-kilter courtship. Fast-forward 25 years, when Audrey and Richard, who've settled nicely into their upper-crust existence, are planning their silver wedding anniversary celebration. The bons mots and barbs fly as though the decades had never ensued, and the characters are as cluelessly endearing as ever. And the humor, perhaps not for all tastes, is decidedly British: "You're a liar and a cheat!" exclaims Audrey to a passerby at one point. "I should have known it--you're from Czechoslovakia!" On the menu for the party, there's much clucking over the appropriateness of the planned quail and truffle terrine. Why? "Bird flu!" announces Audrey. But the actors are so enmeshed in their surroundings, they bring a well-worn comfort to their portrayals that creates a cozy environment to escape into--as inviting as a bay-window seat with boiled-wool blankies. Fans of the series will love to see how the actors have aged (gently) and how the characters haven't. The special "making-of" featurette is a particular delight, with all the actors chatting about considering returning to roles they thought were long wrapped up--and relating their delight in finding their chemistry with each other was just as crisp as it was in the jolly old days. Just right.--A.T. Hurley

To the Manor Born---25 years later November 1, 2008 we loved the silver anniversary To The Manor Born-------It was great to see them all again and the story and acting is just what we expected.
Nice to see old Friends! October 31, 2008 My favorite of all the sitcoms. I've almost memorized the lines in the old series. This is a lovely update. Not quite as funny as the original, but I'm glad to own it. I'll watch it again and again.
Penelope Keith is the best. She once made a show called Spider's Web. It was filmed more like a play than a movie and was very enjoyable. Why isn't it on DVD?
A Wonderful Sequel to a Fabulous Series! October 21, 2008 I loved "To the Manor Born" when it aired on my PBS Station in the early 90's. I then added the series to my video library. Having this new 25th Anniversary edition is a very special treat.
Good but slightly disappointing October 7, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
We watched the entire series and purchased it on DVD as soon as it was available so when I saw the Silver Wedding Anniversary show we couldn't wait to watch it.
Seeing the original characters/actors after all this time was truly a treat but we found the story for this special to be disappointing. The disaagreent between Audrey and Richard was contrived, to say the least and why introduce a new central character, the nephew (played well by Alexander Armstrong) and not give him anything to do other than being "eye candy"?
Minor points certainly and we still enjoyed see our old favorites together again but it could have been better.
Incredible Anniversay Edition October 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was as good if not better than the original series. Outstanding in every way. I was riveted to the T.V for the duration of the show.
