This is the WAY to watch Star Trek!!! January 9, 2009 I've been watching Star Trek since I was a kid. The first episode I ever saw was the animated episode "Beyond The Farthest Star".
So my jaw dropped when I was at a friend's house one day (who had cable) and I first saw "The Savage Curtain". I was astonished... this was a LIVE action series too? I asked my friend.
The first VCR my family bought was at MY request... because I wanted to record and KEEP every episode.
The original unaltered episodes are on my home recorded DVD collection somewhere, collected off of the Sci-Fi network during the constant reruns of several years ago.
But...
I have always wanted my OWN copy of the unedited episodes... usually significant dialogue is clipped out to make room for commercials. With VCR tapes we just couldn't afford to buy 'em all.
But now we have DVDs, the Internet, and occasional deep discounts.
We also have brand new special effects, which are very creatively done and NOT overused. I completely agree with many of the other reviewers... as a long time Trek fan I was extremely skeptical but they MADE IT WORK.
These episodes look and sound as great as ever... there are even vessels from the ANIMATED series that now appear in the episodes!
Absolutely wonderful!
Every once in a while, I go back in time and rewatch these shows again "for the first time".
And now I really can... in their ENTIRETY no less!
Our kids and grandkids are used to modern looking stuff... the old series just don't seem to look as cool or impress them very much.
So - as with the first three orginal Star Wars movies - this is a GREAT way to share a part of television history with our kids and grandkids!
"The Doomsday Machine" was always my favorite episode of all time, and this show in particular is SPECTACULAR using the new effects. It's like watching an epic motion picture!
Some of the episodes don't show us much... an occasional alien planetary background or a ringed planet we didn't expect.
But then there are the ones where the original affects are still similar, just enhanced and modernized in the way they would have been done had the technology been available in the 1960's.
This is truly Trek at its best... the ONLY way I would have sprung for all 79 episodes.
(And don't forget... we also get "The Cage" and an extended version of "The Cage" in the Season 3 set). One of them has enhanced f/x and one of them is classic with an introduction by Gene Roddenberry himself (originally released as a VHS tape).
Three pack January 7, 2009 I was very happy to get this product for Christmas for my boyfriend, we have watched many of the special features on the disks. My only complaint was that for the $200 I spent the condition of the box of the first season was damaged. It was cracked in several places and the inside box was damaged just a bit, the dics were all fine just the packaging could have been handled better.
DVD's arrive in cracked case January 6, 2009 I love Star Trek, but when I received the $200 set, the inside special-made DVD carrier was busted & roughed up on season I. I returned it, since it was a lot a money. On receiving a new set, it was also shattered and the outside holder also cracked. Given the fragile nature of DVDs, I didn't want to find out, 6 months from now, that some of them would not play, so I returned it also. Maybe some folks wouldn't mind this problem, but for $200 I wanted something that wasn't broken from the git-go.
Star Trek remastered January 6, 2009 I have been a fan of the show since my father introduced it to me when it was in syndication back in New York City in the 1970's on WPIX Channel 11 on Saturdays at 6pm. I have since long moved from the city but as of I guess 2 years ago in Broome County New York on My Network t.v. channel they began showing the remastered show on t.v. it was great to see it enhanced but one thing I did notice though maybe it is just me that certain scenes are edited and I wonder if anyone has noticed that on the d.v.d. release. I can't remember what scenes in episodes but I will eventually buy this set at some point of time. Kudos to them for doing this and I bet Gene and all those would be proud to see this as well. Live Long and Prosper everyone.
A job well done, story and dialogue are left intact January 5, 2009 Within this three-volume pack of DVD's are the three seasons that constitute the original Star Trek, each beautifully restored and enhanced in the visual effects department. In certain episodes, such as 'The Doomsday Machine' and 'Balance of Terror', the effects are readily apparent.
Take for example 'The Doomsday Machine', in which the battered wreck of the 'Constellation' has been given a complete face lift. Gone is the 'cigarette-burned plastic model kit' look, now replaced with a seemingly twisted hulk of metal which continuously sheds spinning shards of debris into the void. And the 'Planet Killer' itself looks truly menacing and 'miles long' now, with a pitted, blackened surface that comes as a result of eons of travel across extragalactic space.
Everything from phaser fire to planetside vistas has been given an enhanced appearance. Look closely, and you'll see a moon in the sky where none had existed in the original. Pay attention to the Gorn in 'Arena', and you'll see his eyes blink for the first time. Planets and alien spacecraft are given true physical form, as opposed to being anonymous blobs of light. These are just a few of the changes you'll encounter when watching 'Star Trek: Remastered'.
First time buyers will note that the first season is presented in both the abandoned HD-DVD format, as well as standard DVD. If you happen to own an HD-DVD player, then all the more power to you. Sit back and enjoy these sci-fi classics as they've never been presented before.
The addition of 'More Tribbles, More Troubles' (Star Trek: The Animated Series), and 'Trials and Tribble-ations' (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) is pure icing on the cake. Look for these bonus episodes in the Season Two set.
Skeptics take note, over 90% of the CGI-enhanced effects deal primarily with the 'Enterprise' within the interstellar medium. The story and dialogue are left intact. You need not worry about a 'fake moustache' being planted on Scotty where there was none before.
As an aside, I've heard the tale that when Gene Roddenberry saw the model of the Enterprise refit prior to 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture', he had made an observation to the effect that he had always envisioned the 'Enterprise' to appear that way, even back in 1966 -- and how they were limited by the special effects and budgetary constraints of the era.
I find this amusing in light of how many people slam the remastered version for being too 'modern-looking'.
Think of how many people back in 1966 watched 'Star Trek' for the first time, and thought of the effects as being 'too flashy' when compared against 'The Twilight Zone' or 'The Outer Limits'
I believe Gene would have approved of remastered 'Star Trek'
Recommended for all fans, both new and old.
