Cute, light, and fluffy January 6, 2009 Northanger Abbey is probably the "lightest" of Austen's novel, and this adaptation is the lightest film adaptation I've ever seen. It's been "sexed up" for modern audiences by the inclusion of several fantasy or dream sequences which I found rather obnoxious and disturbing. My young kids were in the room when this movie was on, and it was the only time I've ever been concerned that Austen wasn't suitable for children. The two leads are charming and fun to watch, and the film stays mostly true to the story. I enjoyed it but can't say it's one of my favorites.
Northanger Abbey January 6, 2009 For many of us who enjoy the works of Jane Austen, this is by far the best adaptation of the book. Felicity Jones was a perfect Katherine Morland. I enjoyed the dialog, the scenary and the players. Although not true to the book in certain areas, this version was nice (perhaps too short) and sweet and I know Jane Austen would have approved! Too short December 20, 2008 The movie stays pretty much true to the book. However, I would have liked to see the relationship between Catherine and Mr. Thorpe develop a little more. He is a lot more crafty and persistent in the book. I would have also liked to have seen more time alloted to Northanger Abbey. I was just getting the feel of it when it was time to move on. The ending was a little abrupt. However, all in all I liked the movie and would recommend it to friends.
Wonderful casting December 18, 2008 The actors chosen were able to tell Austen's story so well while fully embodying all the subtext inherent in the story. It was delightful to see the story unfold rather than being forced, the acting realistic yet still somewhat ethereal. We fell in love with the actors as much as the characters fell in love with each other.
I am sorry to hear it's a cut version December 14, 2008 I really think this is one of best Jane Austen adaptations ever. I was sorry to hear that it is cut from the original. Unfortunately, none of them ever compares to the books because the books are, of course, masterpieces depicting the truest truths of human behavior. I highly recommend listening to unabridged audio versions that give them life but don't take away from the beautiful language.
