If Jonny, Haji, Race Bannon, and the rest of the Jonny Quest gang were idiots, their animated adventures might play out like The Venture Bros., a consistently funny spoof on '60s adventure cartoons from the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming. The premise should be immediately familiar and nostalgic for any Saturday morning TV aficionado who grew up in the '60s and '70s: Dr. Venture (James Urbaniak from Henry Fool) is an inventor, while sons Hank and Dean's insatiably curiosity lands them in hot water with supervillains, robots, magicians, and the like. Brock Sampson (voiced by the very funny Patrick Warburton of The Tick) is the good doctor's right-hand man, who rescues the boys with good old-fashioned manpower. The twist in The Venture Bros. is that every single character, down to the supervillains' henchmen, are complete and utter dolts, and their adventures are inspired more by foolishness, personal obsessions (for Brock, it's sex and violence, and for Dr. V, it's diet pills and a daddy fixation), or just plain cosmic weirdness than any sense of post-Kennedy-era adventure and derring-do. The result is subversive and occasionally shocking insanity (Dr. V loses his kidneys in the series opener "Dia de Los Dangerous"; Dean suffers an unmentionable personal injury in "Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean"; the boys believe that Dr. Venture's stomach tumor is actually a pregnancy in "Return to Spider Island"), but with enough flashes of surreal brilliance to make this a must-have for modern animation fans. The Season One two-disc set contains all 13 episodes, as well as two bonus episodes--the show's original pilot, "The Terrible Secret of Turtle Bay" (for Hank and Dean, the secret is something decidedly salacious), and "A Very Venture Christmas," as well as a handful of deleted scenes. Commentary by the show's creators and cast can be heard on five episodes, including "Turtle Bay," and the extras are rounded out by "Behind the Scenes of the Live-Action Movie," a 20-minute mockumentary that features much of the voice-over talent dressed in some ridiculous costumes. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Go team venture   December 16, 2008
I'm enjoying my disks a lot and will be holding on to these for years, the only drawback was that all the bleeps and blurs are still part of the show. I had assumed that the words and content were blocked for broadcasting purposes but I was wrong. Still I am very happy with my purchase and can hardly wait for season three to become available. If you're a venture fan this is well worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Show   December 3, 2008
Adult Swim has to be the greatest thing to happen to Television in history. Venture Brothers doesn't disappoint. I got this for my dad and have been watching it with him, the first season has some rough edges and the first few episodes can drag a little, but they're still very entertaining even when they're not humourous, and the series has only gotten better (I don't know of any many other shows I can say that for). The Major Tom episode demands to be one of the top 10 moments in Television history.

5 out of 5 stars Venture Brothers Season One   November 26, 2008

An extremely sarcastic and dark sense of humor, I really enjoyed the first season of this show! Each episode is about 21 minutes or so long and are for the most part, stand alone. These are not cartoons I would suggest for children as they have a distinctly vulgar and adult sense of humor to them. The last episode had a bit of a surprise to it, however things were explained in the second season. Patric Warburton does the voice acting for "Brock Samson" and does it extremely well. Every character in the series is done over the top and voice acted perfectly for the show! If you see one Venture Brothers episode and enjoy it, you should enjoy all of them! A must buy for anyone with the sense of humor to enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Show on TV   October 29, 2008

This (along with Home Movies) is easily the best original show that Cartoon Network has ever produced, and it is easily one of the best, weirdest, funniest, most creative and inventive shows on television right now. A mash-up of Lee & Kirby era Marvel Comics, Johnny Quest, Doc Savage, dysfunctional relationships, and black comedy, "The Venture Bros" wears its influences like a badge of honor and gleefuly warps them all in a refreshingly skewed direction. Kudos to Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer for this brilliant show, to Patrick Warburton for his born-to-the-role portrayal of Brock Samson, and to J.G. Thirlwell for the best theme music on television.

5 out of 5 stars Go Team Venture!!   September 25, 2008

Absolutely LOVE this cartoon. Besides Project Runway (yeah, I know, but everyone has to have a vice) this is the only show I actually watch regularly. And even thought I see every episode on TV (usually multiple times) it's one of those DVDs, like one of my favorite movies, that I have around for that rainy day when nothing else will fill the spot. I absolutely love this cartoon!!
