Excellent Movie, but DVD is just plain false advertising! January 30, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Enjoyable film, but Hannover House DVD says a lot of things it doesn't mean. First, it says Standard Version and Widescreen Version, but there is only the Widescreen Version. Widescreen is fine by me, but it shouldn't say there is a Standard Version if there isn't. Next, the Bonus Features say Director's Commentary, Deleted Screnes, Gallery, and Special IFilm.com featurette. I don't know where these features are supposed to be, but they are not in the menu. You can not access Commentary in the features or by choosing an audio track. There are no Deleted Scenes listed in the menu and no Gallery. There is a Trailer and several Featurette segments which are an excellent supplement to this film. Maybe they consider the Director speaking about the film in the Featurette is Commentary, but I don't. I don't know if they snuck some deleted scenes in the Featurette, but if Deleted Scenes are listed as a Bonus Feature they should be a separate menu option. Like I said, the film is very enjoyable, but either someone really messed up when they printed on the covers, the filmmakers are trying to stretch the definitions of what these Bonus Features are, or the filmmakers are deliberatly trying to mislead people into buying this DVD. I could be crazy, but I still don't think any of these features will show up on this DVD if someone else plays it. I really hate it when people try to pull stuff like this especially when the actual content of the DVD is excellent. The film and the Featurette are very enjoyable and worth seeing, but telling me I'm getting all the Bonus Features instead of just telling me I'm getting a Widescreen Version with a Featurette is the reason this DVD gets a 2 instead of a 4 or a 5. Movie is a 4, Featurette is a 4 or maybe even a 5. Telling me there are Bonus Features when they don't actually exist, -1.
A Contemporary Trip Down The Rabbit Hole April 14, 2005 38 out of 38 found this review helpful
A quirky, dark little comedy starring Marguerite Moreau (Mighty Ducks, Firestarter 2) in the role of Kat, a naive, young journalist in search of a big story. She is hired by an unsavory fly-by-night internet news agency and is immediately sent off to Hawaii in search of the ultimate surf story. She must locate and interview the legendary surfer known only as 'The Monk.'
However finding the elusive and enigmatic Monk isn't going to be easy. Trying to get a straight answer from the spaced-out surfers and locals she meets along the way is much like Alice in Wonderland's search for the White Rabbit. Asking for directions from this outlandish group of characters is like trying to get directions from the Cheshire Cat.
Troubles abound as she follows the cryptic clues down the proverbial rabbit hole. Saddled with the unwelcomed presence of an overbearing boyfriend and a bumbling guide who doesn't seem to know his way around, Kat is quickly approaching her deadline and the end of her finances.
Will Kat ever locate the Monk and if she does what wonderous 'Words of Wisdom' will he have to share with the world? Or, is the Monk nothing more than a fanciful legend told by the Islanders to confound the tourist? Whatever the truth, what Kat discovers will change her life forever.
Sometimes funny, sometimes absurd, but for the most part rewarding. A potential cult classic.
