With the knockout one-two punch of 1992's Reservoir Dogs and 1994's Pulp Fiction writer-director Quentin Tarantino stunned the filmmaking world, exploding into prominence as a cinematic heavyweight contender. But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that reestablished John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget ($8 million) independent showcase for an ultrahip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin, and Phil Lamar). It was more, even, than an unprecedented $100-million-plus hit for indie distributor Miramax. Pulp Fiction was a sensation. No, it was not the Second Coming (I actually think Reservoir Dogs is a more substantial film; and P.T. Anderson outdid Tarantino in 1997 by making his directorial debut with two even more mature and accomplished pictures, Hard Eight and Boogie Nights). But Pulp Fiction packs so much energy and invention into telling its nonchronologically interwoven short stories (all about temptation, corruption, and redemption amongst modern criminals, large and small) it leaves viewers both exhilarated and exhausted--hearts racing and knuckles white from the ride.  Want to see another one January 6, 2009
Why doesn't Quentin Tarantino do another one like this? I like this one, but I feel he's got another one that could even go further.
I liked the direction. I liked all of the actors. And I liked the music.
I hope he does a sequel!

I bought this dvd for a gift to my future son-in-law. When he opened it he just looked at me and said "how did you know this is my favorite movie?". I told him I had asked Santa for help.

I am so happy I bought this. It was in perfect condition for being a used version. Everything was still in the box as it should be. I got it for my brother for Christmas and I actually got a hug for it!!
Tarentino's Best December 22, 2008
This is QT's finest work. It's heads above all else that he's done, most of which is fairly insipid. In the gangster genre, this is a must see that stands with the classics. This particular release is very well done, and stands with others such as "The Godfather", "Goodfellas", "Casino", etc.

This film breaks at least a couple of "rules" that apply to the novel or a movie. First, there is not a single character in it that the viewer can like. They are all human dregs, with no use whatever to society. Second, the plot is not continuous, and the viewer has to reassemble the pieces. These faults should destroy the movie--but somehow they don't.
In fact, this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. It is amazing that the director/writer could break such cardinal rules and produce a masterpiece. Is it the acting? Partly. The acting is certainly excellent. Travolta plays a stupid, druggie, ugly hit man to perfection. Samuel L. Jackson is a vicious but childlike killer who sees great meaning where none exist. The others in the cast are equally good, full of contradictions as people are. The dialogue is different from any other film I have seen--it's disjointed, real. People think they are making sense when they are not, just like in real life.
There's nothing uplifting or feelgood about this movie, and I can see why a great many people would not like it or be offended by it. But it is still a real picture of the human condition.
