The latest bro-mance from team Apatow (the guys who brought us Superbad, Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Pineapple Express is the story of Dale Denton (Seth Rogan) and Saul Silver (James Franco), a pothead and his dealer who accidently get caught up in a drug war between two gangs with some corrupt cops, high-school girls and small-time henchmen thrown in for good measure. At its core, Pineapple Express is a stoner comedy--a tale of two semi-slow giggling and loveable idiots in way over their heads--this formula has made for some entertaining comedy over the years, Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke and Dave Chappell's Half Baked being two of the best examples. What sets Pineapple Express apart from these silly classics however, is the consistency of the humor, the perfect chemistry between Rogan and Franco and the giddily ridiculous action sequences (and the fact that even mild intoxication is not required to enjoy the humor). The movie retains the sweetness that is present in most of Apatow's films, making the characters' poor choices and ultra-violent actions somehow justifiable, or at least relatable. The site gags, pop-culture references and perfectly timed non-sequiturs only enhance the hilarity. Director David Gordon Green, known mostly for the understated and reflective films George Washington and All the Real Girls, seemed like an odd choice for such a raucous and over-the-top comedy, but it turns out Green's stamp is all over this film (as is his long-time cinematographer, Tim Orr) who together manage to turn Pineapple Express into much more than the sum of its parts. --Kira Canny

Product Description
A new comedy from the creative genius of Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Talladega Nights) follows a pair of druggie losers as they reach the top of the hit-list when one witnesses a mob murder and drags his buddy into a crazy flight from mobsters bent on silencing both of them permanently. The film stars new sensation Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin) and James Franco (Spider-Man 1-3) and it co-stars Rosie Perez (Do The Right Thing) and Gary Cole (The Brady Bunch Movie). Movie is directed by David Gordon Green.

5 out of 5 stars Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow For the Win!   January 6, 2009
I consider myself to be one of the biggest Judd Apatow fans there is. I loved Freaks and Geeks, cherished Undeclared, and have fallen in love with his films. But a few of his recent productions haven't really impressed me. You Don't Mess With the Zohan was painful to watch and Step Brothers was a mess of a movie that was pretty much two of the least funny actors in Hollywood beating each other up. So as utterly fantastic as the Apatow produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall was, by the time I saw "Pineapple Express," I was beginning to forget why I loved Apatow movies at all. Well, "Pineapple Express" definitely reminded me why.

Writer/actor Seth Rogen is funny as ever in this stoner/action flick that just doesn't let up. I found myself literally laughing out loud at every moment. Fact is, I would have been embarrassed for laughing so hard at a public theatre... but everyone was cracking up. Like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Superbad before it, this is definitely one of those movies that will have you and your friends talking about the quotable one-liners and crazy scenes long after the credits have rolled. As hilarious as Seth Rogen's performance is--and it's without a doubt his best one yet--his writing is even better.

I wouldn't say it's better than the aforementioned FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL or SUPERBAD, because it's such a different movie. It's definitely more similar in tone to them than the other comedies (read as: travesties) of this summer, such as the abysmal Tropic Thunder. The only thing that's different is that while this movie does have some somewhat emotional scenes, it never gets to the level where it really touches you. But the thing is, it doesn't try to. It's a straight forward action/comedy about two stoners in a bad situation that's made worse by their collective (but charming) stupidity. And Freaks and Geeks fans will go crazy over the Rogen and James Franco reunion.

It's an easy contender for a spot in the Top Five Movies of 2008, and will certainly make you laugh until you cry, whether you're familiar with the green stuff or not.

9/10

4 out of 5 stars This movie is my new BFFF   January 6, 2009
As I do not smoke pot, I was more than a little hesitant to see Pineapple express, for fear it would be yet another stoner movie full of weed jokes I didn't get. However, I have never been so pleased to be disproved. I laughed from the beginning to the end of the movie, and the memorable quotes instantly became an easy way to draw a laugh out of the friends who were with me. Though Rogen does play much the same part as he has in previous movies, his comedic timing with Franco is the best I have seen yet. The two actors play off each other fantastically and honestly it's Franco who steals the show. I was also surprised to find a good bit of subtle humor in the movie, beyond the blatant pot jokes and stoned conversations that were well done enough to have me nearly doubled over in laughter, but also humorous details you have to be sober to catch.

Obviously not a movie for younger kids as there's a good bit of gore and violence, but a perfect gift for anyone who likes a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Our Generation's Cheech And Chong.   December 11, 2008

this movie is comedy genius. i went into theaters not expecting it to suck or to be amazing , and it blew me out of the water. i could not stop laughing the entire time i was watching it. first of all the script is hilarious and even though i love seth rogen, james franco stole the show as Sal, the drug dealer. he is so loveable and funny. they are def our generation's cheech and chong. i hope they make more movies as funny as this because we need them.

1 out of 5 stars An Incredible Disappointment   December 6, 2008

I am a huge fan of both director David Gordon Green (All the Real Girls and George Washington are superb pieces of cinema) and Seth Rogen, both as a writer and a performer, but this film is an incredible mess.
Essentially it is a chase picture with no chase. None of the humor worked, the characters were annoying, the editing was terrible, and the action scenes were bland and uninspired.
And the excuse that "you don't smoke pot, therefore you won't get this movie" is absurd. I didn't have to be a hit man to love Pulp Fiction. I didn't have to be an astronaut to love The Right Stuff. So don't fall for that idiotic argument. This is just a bad movie; pure and simple.

5 out of 5 stars Funnier Every Time I see it   December 6, 2008

If you want a good stoner movie that seemes to get funnier the more you see it then give this movie a look. I would put it up there with Cheech and Chong and Harold and Kumar. Enjoy and happy trips
