Amazon.com Just when it seems as if things can't get any worse for high-school drama teacher Dana Marschz (Steve Coogan), he quips, "My life is a parody of a tragedy." Yet that very ability to laugh in the face of defeat will allow this failed actor to triumph over adversity. A lovably ridiculous dreamer like Waiting for Guffman’s Corky St. Clair, Marschz lives in Tucson with his sarcastic wife (Catherine Keener) and their silent boarder (David Arquette). Though he tries to inspire, like Richard Dreyfuss in Mr. Holland's Opus, only two students (Spring Awakening’s Skylar Astin and Phoebe Strole) share his passion for theatrics. When the principal decides to eliminate his department, Marschz makes a bold move: he writes an original play, lets the class contribute their own unique talents, and puts the whole thing on as a fundraiser (they'll need to bring in $6,000). Sure, everyone dies at the end of Shakespeare's classic, but in Marschz’s musical sequel, Hamlet 2, a time machine allows the Danish prince to turn back the clock to set things right. Just as his production starts to take shape and retired actress Elisabeth Shue (played by Shue) offers her support, his marriage hits the rocks, he starts drinking again, and the community protests against numbers like "Rock Me Sexy Jesus." (Amy Poehler portrays his ACLU attorney.) Though Andrew Fleming’s comedy follows the usual inspirational instructor trajectory, ribald humor helps the medicine go down and Coogan gives his most unhinged performance since Tristram Shandy. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Not an "A" January 2, 2009 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This movie had potential, but for the most part it wastes the talent of such people as David Arquette, Catherine Keener and Poehler. Elizabeth Shue is decent in a glorified cameo. The story involves a failed actor(Peter Coogan) who is now teaching drama at a basically all white school. While trying to have a baby with his wife, he finds his class has been filled with students from a local more urban school and also that the drama department will be cut next semester. Trying to save his class, he begins to write an original play--a sequel to Hamlet. While Coogan can be funny, the performance is hit or miss. It is like watching a mix of Monty Python sketches, some things are really funny, others just leave you scratching your head. This movie is just okay. I would wait for it to hit cable.
Hamlet 2 - Audience 1 - A Close Call December 31, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
"High School Musical" was never like this.
Drama teacher Dana Marschz aims to avert school budget cuts in the arts by staging his self-written play, "Hamlet 2" using his polyglot class The movie is campy to an extreme.
It makes little sense but, if you can suspend your disbelief for 90 minutes, you may be rewarded with a few chuckles. The latter include the show-stopping tunes, "Raped in the Face" and "Rock Me Sexy Jesus." Local authorities protest, the ACLU steps in and the movie has a farcical climax during the play's production in an abandoned warehouse.
The Bard might have been bored by this sequel. It's so bizarre that you may not be.
"EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE" December 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a delicious ride Hamlet 2. I will regret to my dying day not having seen it on the big screen in a theater full of people where I could have enjoyed the "vitality of the shared experience".
The writers of this film..are you reading this? I LOVE YOU. I get it!!!
"It doesn't how much talent you lack, as long as you have enthusiasm"
Steve Coogans character is the ENDEARINGLY human representation of Rumi's classic poem
"Passion makes the old medicine new: Passion lops off the bough of weariness. Passion is the elixir that renews: how can there be weariness when passion is present? Oh, don't sigh heavily from fatigue: seek passion, seek passion, seek passion!"
No matter how many road blocks he hits, he just keeps on going. He wants to help his students, in the end they not only help HIM but create a sense of togetherness that ultimately saves them all.
Yes this film us chock full of unhinged performances. And they work brilliantly. But as Coogans character states emphatically "SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA GO A LITTLE CRAZY TO CREATE GREAT ART".
It is not all fun and games and their are poignant moments that are so beautiful to behold...none of the reviewers so far have touched on the HUMANITY in this film and that is where it really shines.
Ultimately Hamlet 2 is about second chances. Whether you are hoping for one for yourself or if you are in the position to grant one. That is the passionate idea this crazy drama teacher wants to explore for Hamlet. He rewrites the tragedy to give Hamlet the chance to turn things around. And in giving this classic character a second chance he simultaneously creates one for himself.
If you are paying any attention at all you will see that the "therapy" Hamlet ends up getting comes in the wake of his quest for Jesus...he finds Jesus LITERALLY. It is a BRILLIANT device and so empowering to the character and to this particular viewer that I openly wept at that sequence in particular. Jesus has a cellphone and Hamlet can call him whenever he needs him
Hamlet 2 makes PERFECT SENSE. It is a stunning and breathtaking devotional to tolerance and most importantly to the staggering redemptive power of forgiveness.....to LET GO of past or perceived slights and embrace a genuine apology when it is given and conversely to be the one to step up and offer an apology when you know you have done wrong or have hurt someone. In a worst case scenario this movie goes so far as to inspire one to CREATE the apology you need which is exactly what Dana Marschz did. He knew intrinsically, that life is like monkey bars you HAVE TO LET GO to move forward. He created his own destiny despite the odds.
There are a hundreds of laughs to be found in this sparkling gift to cinema but what really moved me was the sense of peace that came in the wake of all of the insanity and also a profound comfort. This film is catharsis in it's purest form. I watched it and was overwhelmed by the idea that it made me laugh AND then it made me think.
WATCH this movie and you will feel your heart and soul soar.
BEAUTIFUL!!!
To the WRITERS, the entire cast and crew of Hamlet 2 I say THANK YOU this movie was GLORIOUS and has inpsired me to always remember PASSION!!!!
If you watched this film and did not enjoy it I hope you will go back and give it a second chance.
Questionable Inspiration Techniques December 28, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
"Hamlet 2" stars Steve Coogan as Dana Marschz, a failed actor-turned-high-school drama teacher. Low on the talent scale, Dana still has ambitions and harbors passions, but only at work. At Tucson's West Mesa High School, Dana regards himself as an inspirational teacher, but his adaptations of popular films performed by his top students, Rand and Epiphany (Skylar Astin, Phoebe Strole), are not clicking. When his latest effort, re-creating "Erin Brockovich," is panned by the ninth grade drama critic and his department is targeted for elimination, Dana conceives a sequel to Shakespeare's "Hamlet," a Busby Berkeley-style musical theatre extravaganza that will embrace neither political correctness nor dramatic credibility. "Hamlet 2" is an amusing movie, but it's not easy to warm up to Coogan, who plays Dana as a loser deluding himself that he can spark students with lame notions of innovation. As the film progresses, however, the viewer becomes involved in the outrageousness of plot turns and Dana's dedication to his art, however strange it may be. Best thing in the film: Amy Poehler as ACLU attorney Cricket Feldstein. Bonus extras include deleted scenes and a sing along.
Hamlet 2 December 23, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This movie is possibly the funniest one I have seen in a very long time. I did all kinds of theatre productions through school, and I have to say, this movie had me hysterical with tears streaming down my face throughout nearly the entire thing. Although the movie could be construed inappropriate in many parts, with its sexual innuedos, it's well worth watching.
