By dint of the inexplicable popularity of their send-up of movie genres in the parody movies Scary Movie and Date Movie, writer/director duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer probably got an epic-sized bucket of cash for this hastily stitched pastiche of drive-by entertainment. There's no particular variety of movie they were sent to send up this time, unless big box-office grossers has now become a genre in and of itself. If so, Epic Movie may well qualify as part of that league itself. Very little expense has been spared to make so-called "comic" references to a slew of mostly recent blockbusters--The Chronicles of Narnia, Borat, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the X-Men and Harry Potter series, Superman Returns, Nacho Libre, and The Da Vinci Code to name a few--and it's assumed we've seen them all. In a goofy thread of a story about four orphans plucked from some of the above, battle must be done through various bastardized plots from same so that a prophecy can be fulfilled and they can assume their rightful place as rulers of a sacred land. Lots of crotch kicks, fart, urine, and vomit jokes speed by as we pass through Willie Wonka's factory and a magical wardrobe with an unusually interesting assortment of look-alikes and name actors caught up in the gag mix (some of it legitimately funny). Darrell Hammond, Crispin Glover, David Carradine, Kevin McDonald, Carmen Electra, Kal Penn put on game (and sometimes gamy) faces, and it's definitely a hoot to watch comedy improv alums Fred Willard and Jennifer Coolidge as Aslo the Lion and the White Bitch do battle in a Narnian good vs. evil character smackdown. As lame as you already expect a movie like this to be, anything that can throw together an homage to C.S. Lewis alongside MTV's Punk'd in less than 90 minutes can't be all bad. --Ted Fry

2 out of 5 stars at least it's short   November 19, 2008
Epic Movie is a spoof movie. Like Scary Movie (which I've seen) or Date Movie (which I haven't). It contains send-ups, with look-alike actors, of movies as diverse as Snakes on a Plane and Chronicles of Narnia, as well as Nacho Libre, Pirates of the Caribbean, The DaVinci Code, X-Men, etc., etc.

It was fun identifying the movies being spoofed, and, as with all satire, laughing at things that were originally serious, but taken out of context, or shown in a different light, or exaggerated, are funny as heck.

I like satire. In my opinion, though, the only reason for satire (or a spoof, or even a remake) is to add something to the original. Sarcasm, satire, spoofs... done well, they highlight the ridiculous in something serious. And in doing so, you see the original material differently, and maybe even appreciate it more.

However, several of the movies being spoofed were funny or even silly to begin with. There's not a lot of point in making a joke out of something that's already a joke. The originals were much funnier, and simply repeating the joke or dumbing it down didn't shed any light on them.

Also, the original material was so diverse that there wasn't a coherent story, or even a coherent concept.

Plus, it was short. Really short. I didn't even finish my popcorn.

1 out of 5 stars If you really like movies, avoid this at any cost!!!!!!!   October 6, 2008
The worst comedy ever made with Date Movie, Superhero Movie, Meet The spartans... If you whant to see something really funny, go for any Chaplin or Monty Python movie, those are funny, not a spoof on other movies just because they don't have writters good enought to write something very original and funny. Avoid at all cost!

1 out of 5 stars A Spoof Movie That Flat Out Sucks   October 5, 2008
I love spoof movies, no matter what the critics say, but this movie maybe had 2 'ha-ha' moments. It felt like a cheesy YouTube video. The jokes are mainly jokes about MTV shows, a bunch of shows that are dumb in the first place.

The movie parody portions were alright, the only one making me laugh was the 'Jack Swallows' skit. The rest were just overdone and trying too hard to be funny. The only good out of the movie is somewhere at the beginning, a completely nude chick runs out of a closet, but that only last maybe 5 seconds. So if you want to see 5 seconds of greatness in a film that's around 90 long minutes long, be my guest. I'd enver watch it again. Superhero Movie is a much better spoof flick.

1 out of 5 stars A pile of crap   September 1, 2008
I don't see who thinks these types of movies are funny except for 14 year olds....they are extremely stupid...and a waste of time.
