Bogie October 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The movies are exactly as described. Not sure if it was worth the price I paid though. I was hoping that there was a feature on the dvds to allow it to be either black and white or color , but there wasn't. Only in black and white. I saw them in color on tcm once, I thought it was great. Not sure where to find them though. The treasure of the sierra madre is one of my all time favorites. The main reason I bought the set.
Casablanca DVD PQ rivals Blu-Ray September 16, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The picture quality of this release of Casablanca is amazing. It is clearly the best ever made available to the public. (As I discuss below, it is being released on Blu-Ray on 12/2, but could that improve it?)
Many believe "Casablanca" was the greatest movie of the 20th century. Its ending is perhaps the most moving of any movie. In the course of the film, the cynical, self-interest hero (Rick) gradually develops to a point where he realizes his own interests are outweighed by the monumental events overtaking the world in the 1940s:
"Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that. Now, now... Here's looking at you kid."
So this cynical man who "sticks his neck out for no one", in the end, gives up the love of his life so as to make a direct contribution to defeating the Nazis.
"Treasure Of The Sierra Madre" is also a good flick worth repeated watching, but to me has never had near the impact of "Casablanca". Still, I'm glad to have "Treasure" on DVD now as well.
The picture quality of "Treasure" is not nearly as good as Casablanca. "Treasure" is very grainy in a lot of the darker scenes.
"They Drive By Night" and "High Sierra" of course come nowhere near the greatness of the first two, but are entertaining, with decent transfers.
It should be noted that "Casablanca" will be released in Blu-Ray as a special 2-disc "ultimate collector's edition" on Dec. 2 for $[...] (on Amazon), but to me this set under review is preferable. For a mere $[...] more you not only get "Casablanca", but also 3 additional high sound and picture quality classics and tons of special features.
The second disc in the "ultimate collector's edition" will contain a feature on "Jack Warner - The Last Mogul", but that can also be purchased separately elsewhere. And it will not include the special features on this set under review. It will also include: 48-Page Photo Book, 10 One-Sheet Reproduction Cards, Archival Correspondence, and Exclusive Passport Holder and Luggage Tag. To me those special features aren't really of much interest. As far as the Blu-Ray movie picture quality, I think there's a limit as to how much improvement you can get on these old b&w films. I believe if you have a quality 1080p television, a good upconverting DVD player, and a good sound system, the quality you get in this set under review is as good as even the most demanding viewer needs.
Plus, if you have a Blu-Ray player that remembers where the film left off, remember that feature doesn't work with all Blu-Ray DVDs. For the ones using Java coding, it doesn't remember. With those, when you hit "stop" you have to start again from the very beginning, including all the copyright stuff, previews, etc. However, if your player has the "remember" feature it works with this standard definition DVD - a great convenience.
Another thing about Blu-Ray is that the picture quality is really quite hit or miss. Some are great for the most part (but all have at least some grainy scenes) and some are absolutely terrible (see "Oceans" 11, 12 and 13). Who knows how "Casablanca" will look in Blu-Ray. I know I am as happy as can be with the quality in this set. But I have no idea how it will be with Blu-Ray, and I can't imaging it could be very significantly better than this.
Great Box Set July 7, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The best about Warner box sets is that each movie comes in its own individual case rather then clumsy custom cases which hold multiple DVDs. This is equivalent to buying each title separately but with a discounted price. This is one box set which contains 4 great movies. Keep the good work Warner Bros!
GREAT COLLECTION...GREAT PRICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! October 31, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The talent and superb acting in these great films is so far above the films of today. Without computerized special effects the actors and writers had to truly perform and these movies are some of the best of classic Holywood. I strongly recommend this product; it should be shown to younger generations so that they can see what real talent is.
"Bogart is still the best" August 15, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I recently purchased Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection, Vol. 1 (Casablanca Two-Disc Special Edition / The Treasure of the Sierra Madre Two-Disc Special Edition / They Drive by Night / High Sierra)Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection, Vol. 2 (The Maltese Falcon Three-Disc Special Edition / Across the Pacific / Action in the North Atlantic / All Through the Night / Passage to Marseille) and the Bogart and Bacall Signature CollectionBogie and Bacall - The Signature Collection (The Big Sleep / Dark Passage / Key Largo / To Have and Have Not). I have a DVD collection of well over 1000 films. I can honestly state that these DVDs are not "among" the best I have. They Are The Best!!! Evey single one of these films are genuine classics. I feel that Humphrey Bogart is the best actor "ever" in American film. If he was cast in a film that didn't have a really strong cast around him he would simply carry the production on his strong shoulders. He would become whatever character he was supposed to be. Also, I must commend Warner Bros. DVD( or whoever did it) on the remastering of all the films in the collections. They did what is simply the best job of remastering a film that has has ever been performed. And the bonus features! Thay are all just wonderful. I can't give any more platitudes without repeating myself. If you are any kind of a Bogie fan, you must get these collections. You will not regret it for one second. Not one! Do yourself a favor and purchase all of them. They are the "Best!" Papa Larry H.
