Amazon.com essential video On her first day of work, Sue Applegate (Ginger Rogers) has to escape the clutches of a lecherous client (Robert Benchley, whose favorite line is "Why don't you slip out of that wet coat and into a dry martini?"). Fed up with the big city, Sue decides to head home to Iowa with the precious $27.50 train fare she's kept in a sealed envelope since her arrival. The fare has gone up, however, and she is forced to pose as a 12-year-old to buy a half-price ticket. On the train, she has to dodge the suspicious conductors and bursts into the compartment of Major Phillip Kirby (Ray Milland), who falls for Sue's masquerade and harbors her for the night. The situation is further complicated by the major's fiancee (Rita Johnson) and her savvy 12-year-old sister (Diana Lynn), the only one who sees through the ruse. Add a stay at the major's academy and some escapades with young, hormone-driven cadets, and you have an enjoyable, if not quite classic, silly comedy, well paced by Billy Wilder in his first directorial effort. Rogers's real-life mother appears in a small role as Sue's mother. Rogers is only occasionally convincing as a 12-year-old, but after all she was 30 at the time. --David Horiuchi

Enjoyable January 6, 2009 I enjoyed watching this movie. The cast were enjoyable to watch. The movie also displays Ginger Rogers acting ability. If you want to watch a romantic comedy and have some chuckles , then this will do.
Great Movie December 6, 2008 I love this movie. I have it on VHS but when I saw it on DVD format I ordered that one too.
Forgotten classic December 4, 2008 Made in more innocent times, they just can't make movies like this anymore. The story is a lot of fun and Ginger Rogers is in top form, even though she doesn't dance much. It's a great showcase for her acting ability - not to mention the drool worthy Ray Milland.
Major and The Minor Great Movie ...Needs to be Restored December 2, 2008 Major and The Miner is a Classic ...But The movie needs to be Digitally Remastered in the video department Very Grainy ...Sound is great
"You know Su-Su, you're a very peculiar child." November 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Beautiful Susan Applegate (Ginger Rogers) is tired of New York where she constantly has to compromise her morality just to get along. She decides to return home and goes to the train station to purchase a ticket. Unfortunately, the rates have gone up. Angry but not beaten, she dons a costume very much like that of a little girl and convinces an innocent bystander to buy her a half fare ticket. Off she goes, but the conductor isn't convinced she's under twelve. She escapes into a man's quarters, Major Philip Kirby's (Ray Milland), and he buys her story about being a little girl. He offers to take care of her for the rest of the trip, and does so well that he escorts her to the military academy for the weekend before she heads home. In the process, she falls for him, but he's engaged.
A delightful comedy, The Major and the Minor is fun from start to finish. It pre-dates films like Too Young to Kiss with the same frivolous story theme and is just as fun. It is also aided by the direction of Billy Wilder in his first American job. He also helped write the script, so his personal polish is apparent on a great deal of the film. Rogers is the real standout though, at the height of her fame. She is very beautiful and certainly convincing both as a young girl and a luscious woman, plus her sense of comedy is excellent.
